In this article below, highly regarded obstetrician and gynaecologist, Miss Avni Batish, explains what endometriosis is, before outlining the symptoms and treatment options for the condition.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when tissue around the lining of the uterus (endometrium) starts to grow outside of the uterus. This tissue then affects the pelvic region, including the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The intestines and bladder can also be affected in some extreme cases.

The endometrial tissue behaves similarly to the uterine lining: thickening, shedding, and bleeding during each menstrual cycle. However, the problem lies in its location, as it persists where it shouldn’t and doesn’t leave the body.

What are the most common symptoms?

Endometriosis can cause a wide range of problematic symptoms. These include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Dysmenorrhea
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Painful bowel movements and/or urination
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infertility

How is endometriosis treated?

Hormonal therapies, such as birth control pills, progestins, or GnRH agonists, can be highly effective when it comes to helping manage symptoms. Laparoscopic surgery and a hysterectomy are the main surgical options if cases are severe enough to warrant surgical intervention.

Over-the-counter medications, regular exercise, stress reduction, and a balanced diet are all also highly recommended for patients with endometriosis. In some cases, fertility treatments can also be considered.

How can endometriosis be managed effectively?

Learning how to cope as well as possible with the associated symptoms, such as doing some effective pelvic exercises for painful periods, will greatly help. Seeking medical attention when symptoms become too problematic and begin to interfere with your quality of life is highly recommended.
