In this article, highly reputable oncoplastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic breast surgeon, Miss Salma Naseem, provides us with a comprehensive overview of breast pain.

What are the main causes of breast pain?

Breast pain is the most common and most presented symptom in a breast clinic. There are two types: the most common is cyclical, and this typically lines with the menstrual cycle, seen commonly between 20 to 50 years of age. It may be in one breast or both breasts, and typically occurs a week before periods are due. It usually settles naturally when the menstrual cycle is over.

The other type is non-cyclical breast pain. This type is not related to the menstrual cycle. It is more commonly seen in people aged between 40 and 50 years of age. Common causes may include contraceptive pills, infection, inflammation, hormone therapy, breast cysts, benign breast conditions, inflammation of the chest wall, and scars on the breast.

When should I consult a doctor about breast pain?

If you experience unusual severe pain that is spreading to your armpit, shoulder and back, please contact your doctor. If you have noticed any associated symptoms with pain such as a lump, change in shape or texture of the breast, and/or discharge from the nipples, then you must consult a specialist as soon as possible.

How is the cause of breast pain typically diagnosed?

The doctor will take a detailed history asking you about duration of symptoms, severity, frequency and any associated features. You will undergo examination of the breast and armpit. In addition, tests such as a mammogram and an ultrasound scan may be advised depending on the type of pain, findings from the clinical examination, your age, and the outcome of a previous investigation of your breast, if you have had that done in the past.

What treatment options are available for breast pain?

Cyclical pain usually settles on its own. If the pain is severe, pain-relieving medications are advised. In addition, wearing a well-fitted bra, reducing caffeine intake, avoiding tobacco products, and evening primrose oil may help.
