Mr Jonathan Dowler is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in retinal disease based in London. He was one of the first ophthalmologists in the UK to use intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents (Avastin, Lucentis, Eylea) for macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, and diabetic retinopathy, and as such has considerable experience in this area. His retinal practice is one of the busiest in London.

He completed his higher professional training, research fellowship, and doctoral thesis in retinal disease at Moorfields Eye Hospital, where he was an NHS consultant until 2012. He was one of the first three clinical directors at Moorfields, and in a ballot, run hospital wide by the Electoral Reform Society, he was elected the first staff governor of Moorfields. He was the Moorfields spokesman on eye protection for solar eclipse, appearing on Channel 4, Sky News, and the BBC, and writing a related editorial in the British Medical Journal. He pioneered the development of clinical roles for nurses and optometrists in the management of diabetic retinopathy, work which formed part of a presentation to HM the Queen, Patron of Moorfields, on her visit to the hospital at its centenary. He has published widely on retinal diseases, and authors the British Medical Journal website monograph on diabetic retinopathy.

Overlapping with his professional development within the National Health Service, he was a regular army officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps until 2000, serving in the first Gulf War, and reaching the rank of Lt Col.
