I had a left hip replacement performed by Mr Unnithan in November 2020 at Ashford Hospital. My operation was both very successful and also performed in a way as to keep the after pain for my muscles at a lower level. The care at the Ashford Hospital was kind and also of a high standard. I would recommend Mr Unnithan without any reservations, he is very approachable, happy to answer any questions, ready to suggest possible help and also is a very competent surgeon!

Mr Unnithan is very direct , he doesn’t mince his words and I appreciate his honesty. He and his team did an excellent job on my hip replacement and I’m very pleased with the successful outcome. The quality of care in the orthopaedic ward at Ashford Hospital was excellent and I really appreciate the time and effort the staff made looking after me. I always felt that I was in good hands and I feel confident that I’ll be well looked after when I have future treatment. Thank you.

I am so very pleased that I got referred to Mr Unnithan, I have the utmost trust & admiration for him.

I found MR Unnithan to be very straight to the point, which was one of first things that I liked about him, On my first meeting with Mr Unnithan I had taken a list of questions but by the time he had explained things to me he had answered all of my questions without me even having to ask. Both my son and myself felt that Mr Unnithan was the right choice for my crucial and complex operation, he was easy to talk to and explained things in detail, we were also very happy with the knowledge that should a problem arise either pre or post op we would able to get in touch with MR Unnithan via email. I am pleased to say that the operation went well thanks to Mr Unnithan who has indeed saved my life to which I am very greatful. I found MR Unnithan to be very professional and I would highly recommend him.

During the early days of Covid lockdown I damaged my knee. I knew it was a bad injury and was shaken by what it might mean, especially given my love of outdoor sports and activities. A trip to A&E and I was lucky enough to be referred immediately to Mr Unnithan. I was immediately struck by his confidence, his calm expertise, and his reassurance that we would get this sorted. He established it was a torn meniscus, and he had me focusing on physio whilst we organised an operation. Through work I was able to use BMI - The Runnymede Hospital. Covid meant planning around timing, but I felt fully ready when I went for surgery a few weeks back. I left surgery the same day, I was walking without assistance, and even with the bandages things felt immediately better. Three weeks later I am training on my bike and you would be hard pushed to see any outward signs of an operation. The actual damage was extensive, the meniscus was not going to heal by itself, but it is now probably better than it has ever been, it feels great. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend Mr Unnithan, and genuinely feel lucky to have met him and have him put me back together!

I am delighted with my new hip. Already at 6 weeks I’m able to move normally and have no restrictions. The leg length is perfect and the scar really neat. All so important as I’m a youngish active person. Mr Unnithan is an amazing surgeon, easy to talk to and he really listens. I’m so grateful he was my surgeon.

I was referred to Mr Unnithan with right hip pain, he was professional, understanding and offered me options for my diagnosis of chronic osteoarthritis. He advised me of the procedure, timings and what to expect after my operation. I was anxious before the operation but he and his team put my mind at rest and assured me that my concerns and worries would be taken into consideration as part of my planned operation. Post operation he was both encouraging and kind in his support of my recovery to date and what to expect over the coming weeks. The advice that he and his team in St Peter's, Ashford and the Nuffield Hospital Woking was consistent and professional. I felt really well cared for and in a safe and professional pair of hands. I really can't fault the performance of anyone and am truly grateful to the NHS for such amazing support and care.

Mr Unnithan operated on my broken patella (knee cap) after I tripped on a pavement so I was admitted as a trauma patient. When I went into theatre I had no idea who would operate on my knee as I had only seen an ortho registrar in A&E. It was a very complicated break so screws and wire were used to repair it and the ligaments were sewn up. I was so fortunate Mr Unnithan was on duty as he is the most caring surgeon I have ever known - when I went back for my first check-up a week after the surgery he admitted he had been worried the previous evening in case it had not worked. He told me not to bend my knee more than 20 degrees but told me the importance of physiotherapy to avoid too much stiffness and loss of muscle. I first saw my physio after my stiches were taken out when I was given some exercises to keep the strength in the muscles in my leg/knee. On seeing my physio for exercises she also regularly massaged around my knee to reduce the swelling and loosen the muscles. I had my six month check recently and Mr Unnithan was very pleased with the way my knee had healed and the strength/mobility I have now so the physiotherapy has really paid off. I am extremely pleased too as there was a lot of doubt as to how mobile I would be after such a bad break. I really cannot recommend Mr Unnithan enough as he is not only a very good surgeon but has a lovely bedside manner and is very concerned with his patient’s welfare. He always tells you to contact him any time with any concerns or questions.

Mr Unnithan told me that 50% of a successful outcome after knee replacement surgery would be down to me. I concentrated on strengthening the leg before the operation with cycling and gym exercises. After surgery, I worked hard every day with physio and at 2 weeks started to rock the peddles on a gym bike. Gradually increasing the range of movement and the strength of weights and gym bands. At 3 months I was able to walk over rough ground for at least 30 minutes. At 6 months I do not notice any problems or pain in the knee and enjoy yoga and Thai chi classes with greater strength than before surgery. I also used an ice cuff to reduce pain and swelling from the first few days, it was a great help.

I wished for 'great care' and that's exactly what, I'm very pleased to say, I received from Mr Unnithan and his team. As a trauma patient I did not have the advantage of preparing for my Total Hip Replacement but Mr Unnithan with empathy and compassion clearly explained my treatment options. Although I was in a great deal of pain I recall the caring and professional way he answered questions regarding my situation and his prognosis which significantly enhanced my confidence in him. I also appreciated the relaxed way he entered into some banter with me which eased my discomfort and concerns. I'm 70 and was determined to make every effort to recover quickly by keeping ahead of the 'recovery curve' and six weeks to the day of my operation Mr Unnithan was pleased to 'sign me off', his exceptional care was paramount. I still have fair way to go to achieve a full recovery and it was helpful of Mr Unnithan to offer me an open appointment to contact him within six months should I feel the need to do so. If you are reading this as part of research into a Total Hip Replacement I can only say that in the unfortunate event I need another Replacement I sincerely hope Mr Unnithan is available to do it. Finally, I would urge you to diligently undertake the recovery exercises which are also key to a successful outcome.

Mr Unnithan did a great job on my knee replacement, he explained everything in detail and was very honest. I knew exactly what I was going to be dealing with and there was no shock about the experience. My knee has healed very well and the scar is very faint already even after just a few months. I have been signed off now but know that I am still recovering and have a little way to go yet but Mr Unnithan has said if I need anything or am worried to just give him a call. I was in constant pain with my knee before the operation and I am so pleased that I had it done. Everyone at The Runnymede did a grand job.

I was seen as a self pay patient by Mr. Unnithan for a total knee replacement when other Consultants had declined due to my Parkinson’s. He reassured me that he could do the operation and filled me with confidence. The resultant operation has been very successful with the previous level of pain almost gone and my mobility has improved considerably. Throughout he has shown a “wonderful bedside manner “ and has tried to look after us financially as self payers to the best of his ability. Thank you Mr Unnithan.

A good caring approach to his patients. He takes time to listen to what you have to say. And he tells you in detail what the procedure is and how to recover. I showed him a short video of myself 10 weeks post operation back at work loading coal onto boats. He was over the moon. I also told him that I has used a cryo ice machine, and had a private sports physio one hour a week. Things like that were of great assistance to a quicker recovery time. The painkillers prescribed do make a difference in the fact that they assist you with your excersises. The morphine does help, in the early stages of recovery.

As I am overweight and have AF the first consultant I saw wanted me to have a weight reduction operation before having hip replacement surgery which I declined. I had already lost 2 stone and wanted to continued losing weight even if I had to wait longer for my hip operation and I was advised that he would pass my case to a colleague. I then received an appointment to see Mr. Unnithan, I was nervous following my original consultation assuming that it may go the same way - how wrong was I!. Having read the other reviews I'll find it difficult to add to them but here goes. What an absolute credit to the profession he is, puts you at ease, explains the pros and cons and listens. I had my right side total hip replacement at Ashford Hospital on 26th July 2019 and apart from having swollen legs, which will settle in time and the muscles still being a bit tender I can honestly say that I'd forgotten what it was like to be pain free! I can't thank Mr. Unnithan and his team enough, there are no words other than THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I've had my follow up appointment and now have an open appointment should I have any concerns etc. All the staff at Ashford were just great too, domestic staff, porters, nurses all have a hand in our care and also do a great job of looking after us.

Mr Unnithan gave me great confidence when he first met me and told what he was going to do, explaining everything in detail, despite the danger of the operation I felt in good hands. He took the trouble to phone my husband as soon as he had completed the operation to confirm it had gone well and that I was in recovery, this was much appreciated. The damage to my old hip replacement [Birmingham hip] required a part to be ordered so there was a delay which was uncomfortable, but there was no other option. the recovery has been faster than I expected due to fantastic team of helpers he had in place to help me at home. I have just seen Mr Unnithan for my first follow up appointment he showed me the exray's of my hip and the work which had been done and answered all my query's. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Unnithan to any members of my family should they need a hip replacement because he cares. He has replaced both of my hips and done a very good job both hips were working perfectly. However, I explained that I now had a pain in my lower spine and also my legs which was slowly increasing so I now had to use 2 crutches to be able to move. He examined me most carefully and suggested I had stenosis in my lower spine. Consequently, he arranged for an MRI scan which confirmed his diagnosis; I am now waiting to see a spine surgeon. Thank you.

My knee replacement surgeon was changed so that the hospital could fit extra surgeries in and I think it surprised both Mr. Unnithan and myself! At our first meeting on the day that surgery was scheduled, he was very concerned that I would not benefit from the surgery as the risk was high that I would not recover my mobility. However, he took the time to listen and did the operation and I am very grateful that he did as it has been far more successful than either of us imagined. I am also grateful for his advice, especially about the use of a cryo-cuff rather than frozen peas to reduce swelling and ease pain - it was comfortable and much safer to use. Also his advice to help stimulate the recovery of the nerves around the site. He fits a lot into a consultation!!! It probably means that his patients tend to have longer waiting times for the meeting, but I wasn't the only patient to say that "It was worth the wait!"

My new hip is wonderful, being pain free after many years is exceptional. My treatment at Ashford Hospital was first class and I was kept informed about what was happening and what to expect continuously. Being woken through the night to have my blood presssure taken was a bit of a nuisance but a necessary evil I suppose. The stockings were a nightmare and once home it was difficult changing them and wearing them 24/7 proved painful especially at night when it seemed they were cutting off circulation to my toes - I must admit I didn't keep using them as long as advised because it was all together too difficult. I was told by many to ensure I did my exercises and I did - I can't stress enough how important it is to do the exercises to ensure a full and reasonably speedy recovery. The only other thing I would mention is that I was advised how to sleep on my side or back but nobody considered advice on sleeping on my front - which is what I do - so I managed on my own making sure to lie flat with no pillows - it worked.

I was due to have a total left knee replacement in Nov 2018 in Ashford Hospital. I checked in to the ward, but in the late afternoon Mr Unnitahn and his team came to see me, in their surgical scrubs, to say it would not be possible to operate on me that day due to circumstances beyond their control. I greatly appreciated that he came personally to explain. I eventually had the operation in early Jan 2019. I am now 9 weeks on and I am very pleased with the outcome, as it is already performing better than my right knee which was replaced some 9 year ago. Mt Unnithan emphasised the importance of exercises and physioptherapy and I know I am benefiting from that. In my dealings with Mr Unnithan he has never hidden the potential difficulties. Once I had decided, after initially having a pain relieving injection, on knee replacement surgery Mr Unnithan, again, went through the procedure allowing me to ask any questions. I fell heavily while running in July 2018 and smashed the collar bone on my right shoulder into many pieces. It was decided that a plate and hook needed to be inserted while the bone healed, and Mr Unnithan did the operation on the NHS. From then onwards I saw him privately. He reassured me that I should get back full use of the shoulder, but emphasised that it was important to have good physio in order to get there. He set me up with an excellent physio in the Runnymede. With her help I made good progress. In Jan 2019 Mr Unnithan did a second operation to remove the plate and hook, to avoid rotator cuff problems in the long run. A couple of weeks later I hardly notice it, and I am well on the way towards having full use my shoulder. It was a pleasure to meet Ashwin Unnithan. He listens and explains clearly. After falling and fracturing my left wrist last September I was seen by Mr Unnithan at the local fracture clinic and advised that, due to the nature of the fracture the best course of action would be a procedure (ORIF) to fix the fracture by inserting a metal plate. This seemed very drastic but after listening to Mr Unnithan's reasons for this I felt confident enough to agree to go ahead. I had the procedure at BMI The Runnymede a week later. Everything from start to finish was clearly explained, I was discharged from Mr Unnithan's care in December with a fully functioning wrist and no issues. Mr Unnithan is a very approachable, affable and knowledgeable consultant. He explained everything in great detail including the pain I could expect post op. The knee is performing as well as can be expected - no, I will never run again, but walking cycling, golf and gardening have all been achievable proving you adhere to the post op physio regime along with religious icing. I was given an open appointment and saw Mr Unnithan a further two occasions and he reassured me that the issues I have, will, in time go. I had revision surgery by Mr Unnithan on my left hip at the end of last month. I am just over 3 weeks post op and delighted with the care I received. I'm free of crutches now and feel as though I am getting my life back already. Mr Unnithan encouraged me to ask questions and answered them in a frank and kind manner throughout the process building up to and immediately after my operation. I will need revision surgery on my right hip in the future and have no qualms whatever about using Mr Unnithan and Ashford Hospital again.

Walking alone on the hills above Runnymede, my left foot skidded on some loose material as I was going down a steep hill and shot out from under me. As I sat on the ground, I knew it was not good news. However, I was midway between road access points so made/hobbled my way some kilometre or so home. Three days later, fairly confident that it was something more than the usual torn ligaments, I reported to a walk-in centre. Yes: my ankle and fibula were fractured and there was talk of my going to theatre that afternoon – so I was very relieved to be sent home with just a back slab. And even more relieved when, having been to the trauma clinic three days later, I was sent home with a boot: the CT scan had shown the fracture to be stable. Given the nature of the fracture and my age, conservative treatment was not the obvious way forward but, a week later, Mr Unnithan satisfied himself that, in this instance, it was the appropriate one. At this stage, I switched to seeing him privately, so that I could ensure that he was the consultant with whom I was working. I was fortunate to be able to get physiotherapy treatment promptly and regularly so that, just nine weeks after the original accident, Mr Unnithan was confident that the fracture was completely healed and that he no longer needed to check me out. Had I gone to theatre initially, I would just have been coming out of plaster and beginning rehab! I am deeply in Mr Unnithan’s debt that he had the courage of his convictions to treat me conservatively, so that it is now up to me to ensure that my recovery is as complete as is possible. A very heartfelt “thank you”.

Mr Unnithan performed surgery on me to fit a plate and stabilisation for a broken collarbone and damaged ligaments. His clear explanation of the options and recommendations pre-op was very reassuring - I had every confidence in his care. He is clearly an excellent surgeon and the operation went well. I have since seen him a number of times for follow up checks and each of these has been handled very professionally but also in a manner that demonstrated a genuine care for my recovery progress. I couldn't recommend him more highly.

I was transferred into Mr. Unnithan's care about 6 weeks before I was due to have my total hip replacement. This was due to repeated cancellations and issues with my previous consultant. I am 26 with acetabular protrusion and I was very anxious and worried about the upcoming surgery. This last minute change really did not help things, but Mr. Unnithan was able to fit me in for an impromptu appointment and settled my worries. He took the time to get to know my case and ask me what my goals and expectations were from the surgery. He did not sugar coat or beat around the bush when explaining things. He was very honest about everything, explaining the techniques he planned to use and his rational for using them. I had a total hip replacement on my right side on August 13th 2018, everything went so smoothly with the surgery and I couldn't be happier! Mr. Unnithan has been so supportive and understanding throughout the whole process and I feel we have developed a good therapeutic relationship. I will need further treatment / surgery as time goes on and Mr. Unnithan has assured me that he will do his best to give me the best care he can. I had my 12 week follow-up appointment 2 days ago and I have made great progress! I can balance on both legs now and walk without limping, put on my own socks, drive with no issues, and I am also back at the gym 1-2 times per week. Mr. Unnithan did an amazing job. He showed me my x-rays and everything looks perfect. I have no leg length discrepancy and arthritic pain has drastically reduced. I only have nerve pain to worry about now but that is inevitable. I massage my scar and use a hand held rolling massager each day as per Mr. Unnithan's advice so as time goes on this should help with the scar tissue and keloids. I would definitely recommend Mr. Unnithan as a surgeon. I believe he truly has the patient's best interest in mind, he listens to his patients, and he treats his patients as whole individuals by taking all aspects of their life into considerations when delivering care. As a nurse myself, I am very happy with the care I have received and continue to receive! I have been documenting my hip replacement journey as I feel their isn't much information or real life experiences online to learn from, especially in the UK. Before my surgery, I did so much research trying to find information about what to expect from getting a hip replacement at my age, but I found very little. You can follow my hip replacement journey on Instagram @ijuststeph. I have saved lots of videos and pictures to share with anyone who is interested or may be going through a similar process. I am always happy to help or answer any questions!

Dr Unnithan fixed my ankle which was badly broken in an accident abroad. The flight home has caused blisters to form on surface. He was reassuring and confident he could mend the fractures and breaks. 3 months later I am completely happy with my new ankle.

about 18 months ago my mother, now 79, had a fall at home. Not wanting to bother anyone she didn’t say anything. Over time the pain down the side of her leg got worse. Finally she wanted to go tho the GP who referred her via Patient choices. Mum was sent an appointment to see Dr Ashwin at BMI Runnymede. On the day in question we arrived for the appointment and consultation. From the first moment my mother met Dr Ashwin she trusted him. X-rays done and result was that mum had fractured the bone cement holding her prosthesis in place. A further 3D scam was ordered but this could only be done at a different hospital. My mother liked the fact that De Ashwin would only do the operation needed if he could guarantee 90% pain free post surgery. There were 2 choices: 1. Short prosthesis for her hip if not too much cement broken 2. Longer prosthesis if bone cement it was bad and shattered. In the following week the scan was done and the result being worst case scenario. The local Ccg also cancelled the operation within the private sector saying it would be too expensive. Mum was deverstated to say the least. Dr Ashwin called my mum and told her not to worry. He then booked her into St Peters Hospital for the surgery and he would still do the surgery. Surgery took place on 23 August 2018. It could have been sooner but Dr Ashwin wanted the best anesthetist on his team. It was going to be a long and complex operation. You see Mum also has Osteoporosis, COPD and an old T7 fracture plus both hips had already been replaced. To say I was worried would be an understatement, especially seeing that mum had been in hospital on BiPAP at the end of June and given 48 hours to live. Mum went into theatre at 1300 and came out of recovery at 8pm straight into ITU. De Ashwin came to find myself and my aunt after the surgery to say that he was happy with how it went. Now 6 weeks later we are seeing him in clinic. Mum has done really well and is walking straighter than I have seen in years. From my point of view I cannot thank Dr Ashwin enough for what he has done. I am a cancer specialist nurse for 19 years and nursing 30 years, so I know how things work and how consultants can be. I can honestly say that should I need anything at all to do with orthopedics there is only one person I want to be seen by. I will sing Dr Ashwin’s praises for all to hear. I have never met, or worked with, such a professional, conscientious, caring consultant who goes the extra mile for his patients. His smile and laugh is infectious and immediately puts you at ease. He kept his promise and since the operation my mum has had no pain at all in her leg (compared to pre-surgery). Dr Ashwin includes the family and always asks after them. Dr Ashwin is a Consultant I can put my trust in, I did and he did not let me down. In my book that’s admirable.

A kind caring, considerate consultant who always reassured me every step of the way and always made himself available. I suffered with a prolapsed disc on my nerve and after careful explanation and consultation we decided together to avoid surgery and follow a path of physio. 6 weeks later I have turned a corner without any pain relief and I am grateful that his considered approach has helped me to avoid surgery. I would highly recommend Mr Unnithan.

Had a complex ankle fracture and could not have been in better hands - complete honesty and clarity throughout the process really helped to manage expectations and understand what was happening and ensure recovery but throughout this plenty of consideration given to me as an individual and ensuring my mental health to aid entire recovery. When choices had to be made in terms of type of cast, weight bearing etc - these were carefully explained with risks and benefits outlined which was very helpful

It is still early days following my THR, just 6 weeks but I am progressing fairly well. I am younger than those who had their hips done at the same time as me. This is my second too. I have completed one hip class where I was very young compared to the others and really would like to have been with some younger participants who need to get back to work and leading an active life...Is there a young hips forum or group anywhere? I know I am not the youngest and indeed one of my school children will have to go through this when she reaches 18, but I do still have ambition and a lot of active years ahead of me. Mr Unithan was very considerate of my age and that I will be getting back into the world of work and family life again, not just looking to be pain free. I do feel I need some more physio to help me along with this and indeed to help the correction of my pelvis from years of compensating with both hips not working as they should. I don't feel that one class was enough to give me the knowledge I need to go forward and work to a more active me. This was not in anyway against Mr Unithan though but the overall program for THR and how there does need to be a difference for each patients circumstances and age and life too if at all possible.

I saw Mr Unnithan before my total knee replacement on 28 April 2018, he explained to me what could be achieved. Now, 10 weeks after surgery, I am now walking pain free on that knee and waiting for my other knee to be operated on (with no hesitation to have this done). The physio is not easy at first, but perseverance is crucial for a better outcome and no one can do it but you! Mr Unnithan tells you how it is and listens to what you (and any family questions) have to say. He is attentive and caring. I had every confidence in him and will again with my other knee. Thank you Mr Unnithan and all the staff at the Circle Hospital, Reading.

Mr Unnithan is brillant! I could not have had better care. I had knee replacement surgery on 10 May and he has been so supportive as well as being a great surgeon. My left knee was totally shot ligaments and all. Mr Unnithan stressed at my first consultation that to get best results I must put the work in on the exercises or there was no point in having it done. And of course he is absolutely right. My right knee was replaced in Nov 2013 so now I have a matching set. This knee is as good as the one I was born with and the left knee is shaping up the same way although this was a much more complex procedure. I have really good movement in them both BUT you must, must, must do the exercises!

I recently had a total hip replacement done by Mr. Unnithan at Ashford Hospital. My handful of interactions with him have been necessarily brief due to his time constraints, but never less than laser-focused in terms of his clarity of procedural explanation, his ability to reassure me about my recovery potential and his infectiously bulletproof confidence in his own abilities. For example, as I was/am young(ish) and fit(ish), he tried to get me to walk down to theatre with him to save time and have a chat on the way, giving the nurses on my ward palpitations as they summoned a porter and a bed. He was morbidly yet realistically hilarious about my odds going in to surgery ("95% chance you'll sing and dance again, 5% chance you'll never walk, and 1% chance I'll kill you...but these are good odds, we'll take them!" And even yesterday, 6 weeks down the line, we reviewed my X-rays and he pointed at the site of the implant in my femur and said, "That...is sheer technical brilliance." And you know what? I totally buy it. Each time I've seen him, I have come away feeling massively positive, uplifted and hopeful about my progress post-op - no easy task when dealing with a commonplace but nevertheless majorly complicated surgical event. He and his secretaries have even gone out of their way to issue me with a piece of documentation relating to my recovery that my GPs refused to provide without charging an exorbitant fee, a kindness that I truly appreciate and which will provide concrete financial assistance to my family. As a patient in the NHS system, sadly it is often possible to feel very defeated about the time and effort it takes to get anything meaningful done...however, once I was assigned Mr. Unnithan I have felt incredibly well looked after and comprehensively informed and educated about the procedure I've had. Physically, the surgery itself came and went ridiculously quickly (just 2 nights in hospital) and it's a testament to the skill it must have taken to perform the operation that I was up and on my feet so soon afterwards with no after -effects other than one routine BP crash. My wound is enormous (25 metal staples the shape and size of The Joker's grin) but neat as anything and has healed impeccably with no complications. Having undergone the meds and exercise regime once I was home, I genuinely feel stronger every single day. My sense is that the operation has been 1000% successful and my recovery is progressing very well too, giving me a new lease of life at the tender age of just 46. I cannot recommend Mr. Unnithan highly enough and I thank him for everything he has done to change my circumstances with great good humour, honesty and unimpeachable expertise.

I took my 85 year old mother to see Mr Ashwin Unnithan. Mum desperately needed a hip replacement. Despite her age he agreed mum needed it, mum underwent lots of test to see if she was suitable ( survive the op ). Mum had her op in February this year. Fantastic care was given to mum. She has very limited hearing, mobility was limited and yes she’s old!. Now 4 months on mum does everything herself, she can walk down the garden, go shopping, do all her housework including hoovering, but the biggest achievement of all is mum is no longer in constant pain. I can not thank this doctor enough for the care and compassion he showed my mum at her age. If your reading this and you also have an elderly parent or partner that needs a hip replacement and your worried about it talk to this consultant, he listens, he gives advice, and he will always help if he can, he’s our little miracle maker. Mums so happy with her new hip and loves her new independence..

I saw Dr Ashwin Unnithan and he told me how it would be after the opposite operation, all very clear and precise, did scare me a little with all the details but I appreciated him telling me how it was. He said how it would be after the operation and how important it was to do the exercises afterwards as he had done his job, now it was up to me. I took this on-board and started from day one. The nurses were excellent always there giving encouragement and advice, as were all the physio team always there ready to help and give encouragement. I felt very cared for and everyone made my stay very comfortable. I consider the operation a tremendous success and I can’t thank doctor enough. It is now six weeks since my operation and I am walking around the house without crutches and no pain. I have also started a little gardening. Thanks again everyone. Best wishes to all. I had a bad fall on the stairs fracturing my ankle into 9 pieces. I was admitted to St Peters in Chertsey as an emergency. I first met Mr Unnithan in the early hours of the next morning. He explained very carefully to me the possible consequences of my injury including the possibility of losing my foot. He was very kind and gentle with me. He subsequently operated later that morning and pieced me back together with plates and screws. He visited me every my day during my stay in hospital and explained that what I had experienced was a severe trauma and I would be in for a long recovery. He was always as reassuring as he could be in the circumstances. His follow up with me both under the NHS and privately was very thorough and he maintained his kindness and open attitude throughout. Six months down the road we were delighted to find I had healed completely and the scarring is barely visible. I can never express my gratitude enough for his skill, kindness and caring throughout. I recommend him very highly.

Firstly, I should like to thank Mr Unnithan and all the Doctors, Nurses and staff at Asford Hospital, for the kindness and respect shown to myself during my recent procedure. Unfortunely my operation was cancelled twice, once because the consultant was retiring and on the other occasion due to the burden placed on the NHS by the Winter epidemic. Given a third date, I started a regime of simple exercises recommended by physio and I am glad that I followed their instructions because I am sure this enabled me to recover from the operation that little bit quicker. I have continued with the exercises after the operation and now lead a normal life, even enjoying my first game of bowls and also not having to endure the pain in my knee, from which I suffered prior to my operation whilst playing bowls. Having seen Mr Unnithan this week, I felt very reassured he would be happy for me to contact him, in the future should I have any problems. .

Referred by my GP as I had arthritic hip which was 'stuck' and severely limited movement - giving me a quite severe stoop and very awkward gait, and painful back if I tried to straighten. Saw Mr Unnithan on the day of my operation and went home 48 hrs later. The care I received during that time was excellent and I thank the staff in Dickens Ward. I saw Mr Unnithan exactly 6 weeks later and was discharged - walking upright, unaided and without pain. My thanks to Mr Unnithan for vastly improving my quality of life.

Fell off my motorbike and broke my collarbone. Mr Unnithan was the Consultant at Ashford walk-in centre where I was taken. He spotted on my X-ray that the clavicle wasn’t just a simple fracture but that a piece had also separated at the back, so in order for a full recovery to be achieved, with a full range of motion, surgery would most likely be needed. Mr Unnithan spent time explaining the pro’s and cons of surgery and gave me time to come to my own decision over a couple of days. I elected for the surgery and was very glad I did. The difference post-op was night and day! Immediately felt more comfortable with much less pain. Throughout the process I always felt very confident that I was in extremely good hands. Mr Unnithan happily answered questions, no matter how stupid, both pre- and post-op and clearly had my well-being at heart. I would thoroughly recommend him to everyone.

My operation was done on the 21st December 2017. I first met Mr Unnithan on the day of my surgery, as the surgeon who was due to do my Total Knee Replacement retired. Mr Unnithan put me totally at ease and explained what was going to happen, I had a spinal Anaesthetic which I was really worried about, but the anaesthetist totally put me at ease, and I admit I did not realise he had down the injection. The operation itself lasted about 2 hours and then I was transferred to the Recovery Ward, I was already awake by this time and once I was checked was taken back to the Ward where I was allowed to have a drink at long last. My operated Knee was put on calf pumps which helps the circulation, these are quite noisy and strange feeling and kept on for quite some time even during the night, plus you have to wear support stockings, these are the most uncomfartable things I have ever worn and they have to be kept on for 6 weeks day and night. (please wash them often). Mr Unnithan came to see me and informed me how the operation went and how pleased he was with the outcome as he had got my knee straight, and he encouraged me to do the physio and this helps to get the knee moving. The following day I had an x-ray done on my knee to make sure everything was ok, they also get you out of bed for a bit of Physio and to help you walk with crutches, they will explain what they are doing and this will help you to get back moving more quickly and to be discharged, on the following day I had to walk up a flight of stairs with my crutches to ensure that I was steady with them and I was allowed to go home that afternoon (23rd December). They will give you all the information you need for going home and medication to cover you for a few days. You also need to following the exercises that are in the booklet you get before the operation, it is important to do these before and after the operation as it helps your recovery. You will also get an appointment with the Physio department, they monitor how well you are doing and suggest other exercises to do, it is important to do these even if you think it hurts, it does hurt at times but I must admit I am now 7 weeks down the line, no longer on crutches, can walk up and down stairs and have driven my manual car and basically beginning to feel better each day. I have now been signed off by Mr Unnithan who was very pleased with my progress as I went walking into his office with no limp and no crutches, so the hard work has paid off. I still have a couple of Physio sessions to attend, but they are worth it. I like to thank Mr Unnithan and his staff, and the Staff at Ashford for all the care, attention and help they have given me to get me back on my feet with no pain. Stay positive, it is diffcult at times, but I am so pleased with the result.

I am a 39 year old very active PE teacher and I developed pain and swelling in my left knee. There was no identifiable moment when this happened, probably just wear and tear and overuse. I thought I would wait a couple of weeks and see if got better and carried on at work which was a mistake and it got worse. I was referred to Mr Unitthan at the circle hospital in Reading and he identified immediately that I had a meniscus tear and needed an arthroscopy. I had an MRI scan which confirmed that I had a medical meniscus tear. I also had the same operation about 16 years ago which was a cricket bowing injury. The operation was a success but there was a huge amount of swelling which could not be explained. Tests were done for osteo arthritis which turned out negative thankfully. The rehab was slower than I expected and I had a few challenges on the way with striking the balance between rehab, physio and work which took time. This was also hampered by having tight hamstrings and IT band as well as weak hamstrings. I also had a flicking sensation of a tendon over my lateral epichondial which was frustrating again probably linked to flexibility. I tried foam rolling and massage which helped. My knee still aches from time to time and my gym program is focussed around closed chain leg strengthening exercises and cycling on the Watt Bike to measure the power of both legs. However, mechanically I am fine and much more comfortable now almost back to full fitness 6 months down the line. The care I received both initially and post op was excellent and quick which was amazing for the NHS. Many thanks Ash! Ben.

In August 2017 I had a pain in my shin/knee area which was thought to be caused by a hip problem. Consequently my hip was x-rayed which indicated that I needed to have a hip replacement; this was subsequently confirmed by the Consultant who offered to do the operation but he was not available until November if I was prepared to wait that long which I was. However, 2 days before the operation date I was told he was off work with a bad back but Mr Unnithan was available instead. By now the pain was sufficiently bad I had to use a walking stick so I agreed to him replacing the original surgeon. Mr Unnithan examined me whilst I was being prepared for the operation. We had a lively discussion and decided to proceed on a logical route to determine if I really needed a hip replacement. He advised that I should have an injection in my hip since the x-ray was not conclusive. I could understand his logic and agreed to follow his recommendation. As a result I entered the hospital at 07.30 using a walking stick and walked out at 15.00 without the need for the stick. The pain in my shin area was diminished but not cured so Mr Unnithan decided on a knee injection which has helped. He also arranged for a MRI scan which shows I have a bruise on my spine which is diagnosed as “moderate Stenosis” and is the cause of the pain. This may be reduced by the use of physiotherapy. Thus Mr Unnithan’s logical approach and diagnosis of my symptoms has meant I have, for now, avoided an unnecessary hip operation for which I am very grateful.

Mid 2017 I was struck by severe knee pain which made walking very painful and difficult. My GP recommended I go to see Mr Unnithan which I duly did. From the very first meeting, he could not have been more professional and understanding. A great guy to have as a consultant. The operation itself took place a few weeks later (and was in fact performed by his colleague - Mr Josh Jacob). To cut a long story short - it was a complete success. I am now fully mobile, active and enjoying life again. My main interests - ballroom dancing and being a glider pilot are now fully back to normal. Well done - to anyone reading this I certainly would highly recommend Mr Unnithan and his team.

He was very clear in his explanations to all my questions and concerns and put me at ease from the very first consultation. He is clearly a very competent surgeon with a great depth of knowledge in the field and knows how to build a rapport with his patients to make them feel comfortable, through what is typically a very stressful situation. I would strongly recommend Mr Ashwin. I will be going back to him for my left full knee replacement. I first met Mr Unnithan as I was about to enter theatre and he made me immediately reassured and confident that all would go well. He later visited me on the ward where I was recovering well. Day 1 after op I managed to walk along the corridor and up and down a flight of stairs. I would totally recommend Mr Unnithan and I want to thank him for my care.

I had a THR under Dr Unnithan. At 42 with 2 young children and a demanding job I initially met Dr Unnithan as a very anxious stressed patient. He was excellent at both addressing my fears but also had such a huge air of confidence I felt so much better after meeting him. My Hip operation was fairly complex and I have made a full recovery. This is,in my opinion, down to Dr Unnithan's expertise. I had little pain even straight after the op and within 6 weeks was driving confidently. Within 2 months I had started exercising on a bike and 3 months on I have full use with no pain at all. And am exercising 3 times a week. It can be a life changing operation; with a determined mindset and a superb expert surgeon - to whom I am very grateful Stefanie Aged 42.

Ash was transparent in that he was willing to listen to ascertain the circumstances and to help expedite the treatment at the earliest opportunity. Most importantly made himself available and was willing to be contacted. Will definitely seek him out again when further treatment is required.

Following a fall in my garden at home I was admitted to St Peter's hospital,Chertsey.Mr Unnithan was assigned as the surgeon to perform the operation to repair my badly damaged hip.On the morning of twhichhe operation he asked to see as many of my family as possible to meet him in the ward when he explained in a clear and sympathetic way the possible serious implications on what was major surgery on a fairly elderly patient. Following the operation Mr Unnithan took great pains to keep an eye on my progress in Swan Ward at St Peter's. He also made himself available for advice outside his professional working hours, which my daughter took advantage of for assurance that her father was really receiving the best care. I cannot speak too highly of the skill and dedication Mr Unnithan has demonstrated nor of the manner in which he has gone out of his way to take such a personal interest in the wellbeing of his patient and in the concerns of the family.

The circle reading was fantastic, with my own private room very attentive nurses and kept to a very high standard of cleanliness. The food was to a very high standard and nothing was too much effort. My consultant was amazing showed me the utmost empathy and was very aware of my concerns and made me feel as relaxed as possible explaining the procedure and easing my concerns. I would highly recommend my consultant and circle reading.

From the first meeting with Mr Unnithan I felt completely at ease. He greeted myself and my partner in the foyer of the hospital himself and unbeknown to me at the time , assessed my gait whilst walking to his office. He took the time to listen to me and my problem which was of the utmost importance as I was extremely nervous about what was to come, being told by previous consultants that my condition could worsen with an operation, never anything positive about it. After listening intently to me and my partner, he explained clearly and candidly what he could do, with my co-operation and determination, post op, to work hard on my recovery, he could only see a successful outcome. He also made sure I knew the pitfalls and hid nothing, as I am also diabetic and he was open and frank about complications which could occur. Once I had decided to go ahead, he did not dwell on the negatives and told me to do the same. I went for x-rays (on both knees, as he wanted to see both) and when we returned to his office we discussed them and he said I was definitely a candidate for a new knee. My appointments came through within days and my pre-op checks were dealt with efficiently and promptly. The operation was carried out on a Saturday and my after care was second to none. I went home on Monday with everything necessary to keep me comfortable and all the information I needed to start my rehabilitation. I have had physiotherapy, firstly a one to one, hours session and 10 days later, in a class with six others who had had similar operations. The physiotherapists were very pleased with my progress and I've recently seen Mr Unnithan (6 weeks, post op) who is so pleased with my progress that we discussed the same operation for my other knee in the new year, as they were both as bad. I cannot explain the difference that the operation has made to me, I would recommend Mr Unnithan for pre-care, surgery and after care without hesitation. The Circle in Reading as a hospital, and the team who work with him there are all excellent.
