Cardiology Update 2016 Meeting organised by St George's, University of London - 2nd December 2016, Royal Society of Art, London UK Management of Heart Failure - Dissecting the new guidelines HFpEF - Mechanisms and management TRANSCRIPT My name is Dr Alexander Lyon, I’m a senior lecturer at Imperial College, London, UK, and a honorary consultant cardiologist at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. I’m also a member of the Heart Failure Association Board with specialist interest in cardio-oncology and heart failure caused by cancer drugs, and also Takotsubo syndrome and stress and the interaction of heart failure. Which were the most salient aspects of your talk? I had the privilege and challenge of discussing heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) which is a growing clinical problem for our health care services, but we’re limited in terms of our understanding of this condition and therefore how we can treat it. I reviewed some of the information about some of the mechanisms. I personally believe there are many different subtypes of this condition. So whereas with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction patients we’ve had success using some common treatments across them all irrespective of etiology, when we move into HFpEF we haven’t been successful with the ‘one size fits all’ common pathways. So therefore we need to do more research to understand particular types of patients, not least related to their comorbidities. So I discussed how comorbidities are and the different ‘flavours’ of HFpEF, and from that then we can start to understand the biology of each one, and personalise treatment approaches. And I finished by giving some real world advice on what we can do with the patients today whilst we still need further research on how to manage the patient of tomorrow better.

Dr. Alexander Lyon presented “Prevalence of CVD and Assessment of CV Risk in Patients with Prostate Cancer” at the 6th Symposium on the Treatment of Prostate Cancer (STOP-6), which was held in Lisbon, Portugal between October 14th and 16th 2016. STOP-6 was accredited for CME by the European Accreditation Council for CME (UEMS-EACCME). The meeting was organized by Bioscript and the Scientific Committee, composed of Professors Laurence Klotz (Chair), Noel Clarke, Karim Fizazi and Bertrand Tombal. Funding to support this educational activity was provided by FERRING Pharmaceuticals. FERRING did not influence meeting content and the views expressed during the meeting represent only those of the faculty.

Jamie Poole was born with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - a heart condition in which a portion of the heart becomes thickened, resulting in the organ being less able to pump blood effectively around the body, causing sometimes fatal complications. Jamie told Barcroft TV: “It’s not a rare condition. One in 500 in the UK will have this condition. Unfortunately with my condition it’s more advanced, or more complicated. And it’s been causing me problems now for the last 10 years.”Not many people have their heart stop and live to tell the tale, however this has happened to Jamie an incredible nine times. Recorded on Monday 20 March at the Royal Society of Medicine. In the UK, individuals over 55 have a 1 in 10 chance of being affected by peripheral neuropathy, with diabetes being the leading cause*. Treatments for painful neuropathies depend largely on the individual, focusing on the type of symptoms, nerve damage and location specific to the patient. Building on our inaugural masterclass in painful neuropathies, this programme covers the most recent clinical developments in emerging therapies, hears from a patient sharing their first hand experience with receiving accessible treatments, and reflects on what experts anticipate will be available in the future. The masterclass begins with a patient experience story by Jo Josh, a patient partner for PAINSTORM, followed by a panel discussion chaired by Dr Hadi Manji, Consultant Neurologist and Associate Professor, National Hospital and University College London, and Past President of the Clinical Neurosciences Section at the Royal Society of Medicine.
