I have been seeing Dr Al-Shakarchi for several years regarding my rheumatoid arthritis and have always found her to be thorough and willing to spend the necessary time to explain things carefully, be it about the condition itself or the ramifications of using the medications being recommended. Professional and evidently highly knowledgeable, she also has a manner which is friendly and puts one at ease.

I saw Dr Al-Shakarchi today. She was running late but apologised profusely and I really felt she meant it! She was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. She listened carefully to me and offered a second opinion on my medical condition, which is what I was seeking. She shared her thinking with me and I felt included in that thinking. I left feeling reassured that the treatment I will receive is the right one. Many thanks to you Dr Al-Shakarchi for your friendly, inclusive consultation.

Dr Al-shakarchi has been my consultant for a good few years. She is clearly very knowledgeable in her field and a true professional but manages to balance this with the perfect amount of care and compassion, never forgetting I am a person and not just a disease. I expect I have been a tricky patient at times but her patience never wavers and she always listens to my thoughts and gives me time and space to make a decision about treatment. I would highly recommend her and her team to anyone needing rheumatology care.

Dr Al-ShakarchiMy experience with an NHS consultant was exemplary, setting a high standard for patient care. What stood out was her unparalleled attention to detail and genuine empathy. She took the time to listen attentively to my concerns, making me feel heard and understood in a way that's rare in busy medical settings. Her explanations of my condition and the treatment plan were thorough yet easy to understand, tailored specifically to my needs and understanding level. Her approach went beyond mere clinical interactions; she showed a deep level of care and concern for my overall well-being, not just my symptoms. This holistic care approach made a significant difference in my treatment experience, alleviating much of my anxiety and building trust in the process. In summary, this NHS consultant's dedication to her patients is evident in her exceptional listening skills, clear communication, and heartfelt empathy. Her professionalism and compassionate care are what make her stand out as a beacon of excellence within the NHS. I left my appointment feeling reassured, valued, and confident in my care plan, thanks to her outstanding support.

Dr Al-Shakarchi takes the trouble to go beyond her remit to find out what's going on in life and health. Her detailed notes are a great help to me in keeping track of my progress and no doubt to other medics looking after me too. Always encouraging, visits and calls also help greatly with mental health.

I recently had the privilege of consulting with Dr. Al- Shakarchi, and I cannot express how truly grateful I am for the exceptional care and expertise I receive at each appointment. Dr. Al - Shakarchi has a welcoming demeanour which always immediately makes me at ease, which is especially comforting considering the uncertainty I feel about my health. Their unparalleled knowledge and expertise in rheumatology set them apart, they demonstrated a deep understanding of my condition and is able to explain it to me in a way that is both comprehensive and easy to grasp. What truly stands out, however, was their unwavering dedication to my well-being. They take the time to listen to my concerns, answer my questions, and address my fears. I never felt rushed during our appointments, and their willingness to explore all avenues to improve my quality of life is truly remarkable. Communication is another area where Dr. Al - Shakarchi keeps me informed throughout the entire consultation process, explaining each step and potential side effect of the medication. This transparency is incredibly reassuring and foster a strong sense of trust in their care.

I’m a medical student currently on placement at Kingston Hospital. I was lucky enough to sit in on one of Dr Al-Shakarchi’s clinics recently and she was the perfect example to me of what an excellent doctor is like. She was patient, kind, thoughtful and insightful. She listened to all her patients’ concerns even if it didn’t pertain directly to her speciality. She’s warm and approachable and makes her patients’ feel comfortable in her presence. It’s clear to me that she wholeheartedly cares for and prioritises the well-being of all her patients. Beyond her duties as a doctor, she also took on the role as a teacher during my morning with her. She was kind enough to answer all my questions and taught me how to take an effective rheumatological history, even though she had an extremely busy and long day. I’m truly grateful for this experience and I know that any other student would feel exactly the same way.

Dr Israa Al-shakarchi is my elderly father’s rheumatologist. She is one in a million doctor, attentive, caring, takes a real interest in the patient and carefully explains so that a lay person can understand. Her attention to detail goes beyond the remits of her own specialty. She incredibly spotted a small suspicious lesion on my father’s earlobe that I had barely noticed and recommended getting it checked out by dermatology urgently. It was cancer, fortunately caught early before it had spread, surgery done and now healing nicely. I owe a debt of gratitude to her. I can’t say I received the same attentive and precise care from the dermatology consultant a few weeks later. He barely looked up when speaking, didn’t explain what he suspected it could be and we had to resort to a conversation with the GP at a later stage. May God bless Dr Israa Al-shakarchi. She is a gem NHS, look after her. A grateful carer/daughter.

Dr Al-Shakarchi has been looking after my 86 year old Mother and her rheumatoid athritis for almost 3 years now (with a maternity break). Mother also has alzheimers which means she is not the easiest person to deal with ! I could not recommend Israa highly enough. Her care, compassion and consideration are exemplary. Although she is obviously busy, we never feel rushed, her explanations are clear and thorough. She clearly has a very wide and in depth knowledge of her speciality. She has made a number of referrals to other Departments to deal with specific problems Mother has and she always asks after the outcomes. Her attitude and sense of humour with us is pitched perfectly, I cant help wondering if she has several hats in this respect, more serious with some, more levity with others ? You ask for 'constructive suggestions on how they could improve to give even greater care'. I have thought long and hard about this one, but, I cant think of anything, sorry.

She arranged for me to have additional treatment (preventative against any further osteoporosis, sent me off for immediate blood tests and told me that I might hear from the Day Surgery Unit about an appointment "in a couple of weeks' time". I got home after my meeting with Israa and got a phone call half an hour later (!) and got my appointment in seven days' time. Fabulous service from the NHS all round and I'd like to believe that a consultant who is so respected might have something to do with the response. For the first time since starting this journey, I feel heard. Dr. Al-Shakarchi is very professional, but also has a way of connecting on a more personal level that makes you feel seen and listened to. Dr Israa Al-Shakarchi deserves her excellent reputation. I believe that she has a genuine commitment to her patients and no matter how busy the clinic she gives her full attention and considerable skill so that you feel valued, a person, not a "condition". The Dr makes excellent notes so that there is continuity of care. I am much better and have a full and active life, confident that my case is being managed in the best possible way. I feel that I can confide in the Dr, discuss issues and ask questions and be taken seriously, respectfully. At the same time, the Dr has a lovely sense of humour, she is kind and encouraging. I understand the time pressures on Doctors and Consultants but the time spent with Dr Al-Shakarchi was the first time I felt heard. I was fortunate enough to have the last appointment and she was willing to spend time with me to pull together pieces of my varied and diverse medical history to give me a diagnosis after many years of being passed around. I cannot speak highly enough of her. I love her approach, she is a straight talker with compassion and treated my like an intelligent adult not a patient who shouldn't really be told what is going on with them and feeling like a burden. The only constructive feedback I can give is that the first appointment with any consultant should be longer with a patient which would hopefully mitigate the need for unnecessary appointments in the future.

I am delighted to be able to comment on this fantastic doctor. I was so impressed with her knowledge and her professional and humerous manner was quite unique and refreshing- asking questions and retrieving necessary information in a concise and thorough way and explaining the symptoms and treatment very clearly with a test to check my understanding! ( I also appreciated the tips for navigating the bloods/pharmacy and x-rays too - everything went like clockwork and I had no waiting around following her order of events!). I left feeling excited and positive and, having been referred through the system for almost 2 years, I feel I have at last reached the person with a clear understanding and a plan of action and consider myself extremely fortunate to be in such capable hands! I am still smiling days after the consultation and cannot wait to begin my medication and hopefully start to see things beginning to improve.

She was objective, yet caring. She listened, she knew all the right questions to ask, and what to analyse to give precise diagnosis. She paused me when I wanted to speak to much, and yet she listened to all my concerns and questions at the end of the consultantion. She even helped understand how to get better care for my conditions, which I'm guessing most people don't know. Been living with hypermobility all my life, and fibromyalgia for more than 6 years, and no doctor was ever able to match all the symptoms - to be fair, it's pretty hard to find out. But she was able to realise it without any biased opinion, and find the right aspects to look for. I'm not happy about my disease, but I feel finally free to be able to look for the right treatment without the fear of wrong doing. She was THAT kind of consultant, that finally comes with a breakthrough for you, that cares, and that do what needs to be done without treating you like a thing/robot/whatever. Highly recommend!

I am a new patient, I was welcomed and the Dr made sure that introductions were done properly. Dr Al-Shakarchi had to work quickly to take a thorough history, reach a diagnosis, examine me and arrange medicines and further tests. I felt that I was listened to, the dr tracked my story very effectively in her notes and I felt that she had captured everything I wanted to raise. I am relieved that I was able to leave the consulting room with a proper diagnosis, a plan of action and all the medicines could be collected from the hospital pharmacy to start immediately. (I had been anxious about managing over the long Easter weekend.) I was given very good information about each of the medicines prescribed, the side effects and how to take them. A friend came to take notes and help prompt my questions. Afterwards we were able to write everything up so that I have helpful notes to support me as I go forward. I understand that the scheduled clinics are already full up to October but my consultant has assured me that arrangements will be made for the follow up appointment that I need by ensuring that cancellations are re-allocated to patients. I am grateful for this . Thank you very much Dr Al-Shakarchi and Kingston Hospital.

Anyone who has this debilitating illness knows we are often thought of as crazy because of the many symptoms which can change daily and often disregarded by doctors, friends and families alike. However, this lovely doctor actually listens and makes you feel so comfortable it’s easy to communicate with her. You actually leave the hospital feeling satisfied knowing everything has been done to help you. If only other medics realised this alone makes you feel so much better. I recently received a copy of the letter, from her, sent to my GP – the detail in the letter was amazing and confirmed what I already felt the she had been listening to me. I have now attended two appointments with Dr. Al-Shakarchi this year and finally my frustration in the medical profession is lifting. I am really impressed with this doctor. Not only has she diagnosed my condition, she has taken the time to review my previous history, and answered all my questions and my wife's questions both regarding this condition and the prescribed medication schedules. It is very likely that I have inflammatory monoarthritis. During these appointments, she has taken liquid from my knee, to reduce swelling, and given me a cortisone injection. This has been much less painful than on previous occasions. I feel very confident in Dr. Al-Shakarchi. She is very easy to communicate with and knowledgeable. I would like to thank her very much and hope that she will continue to oversee my treatment.

I was seen at my appointment time - and then made to feel relaxed so that when asked for my family and medical history this I was able to give without realising that Dr.I.Al-Shakarchui was not only listening but also making notes. The attention I received was the best - examined, blood tests,ex-rays etc., and 3 days on I received a follow up appointment - November - such good service. Dr I.Al-Shakarchui - was so Professional and yet had the patients and also such a pleasant way with her, I really do not know how she allocates her time for the full diary and appointments that she must have( I know her day was given to lots more patients). I would like to say a big THANK YOU.

I am so grateful to Dr Israa Al-Shakarchi. She recently diagnosed my condition of Polymyalgia rheumatica, even though earlier tests had shown this might not to be the case, and it was explained to me very carefully how this sometimes happens. She was very thorough in her examination and gave me every confidence I could be cured and what this process would be. Within a matter of days I was feeling so much better with the prescribed medication and continue to feel that way with my ongoing treatment. I was given very clear instructions on when and how to take my medication. I would certainly recommend this doctor, she was very knowledgable and professional, as well as being kind, approachable and easy to talk to.

I met with Israa Al-Shakarchi yesterday after being referred to see a Rheumatologist, having suffered from what was suggested as being "tennis" elbow for 3-4 months After seeing several others regarding this complaint, Dr Al-shakarchi, made a decisive diagnosis to confirm the relevant treatment to relieve my pain. She has a lovely character, warm and friendly " people`s person" attitude and showed real concern, at no time, made me feel as being rushed out the door.

My appointment had been changed 3 times and on my last appointment, with Patient Reception being closed, I was told to sit in the appropriate place not having been able to check in at all. By the time I got to see a Doctor is was after 6pm on a Friday. Doctor Al-Shakarchi stayed to see me despite not having any notes or information on me other than knowing I had been put off enough. She was amazingly caring, very authoritative and wanted to help as much as possible. I was astounded that whilst having no hospital information, she did as much as anyone possibly could to help and I was absolutely delighted with her response after having been put in a difficult situation. Many many thanks Doctor Al-Shakarchi! (Mrs) Sue Earey

It was a genuine pleasure to see Dr Al-Shakarchi. She has a rare ability to be able to put people at ease whilst still being thoroughly professional. I feel extremely confident that she is exploring every avenue in regards to finding a correct diagnosis for the complex symptoms I am exhibiting. As a young man of 43 this was very reassuring. Thank you Dr Al-Sharkarchi.

Since being diagnosed with limited scleroderma & Raynaud’s over ten years ago, I attend Kingston hospital for bi-annual appointments. Seeing the same person twice is an extreme rarity – therefore, I have seen a great number of doctors. Dr Al-Shakarchi worked her way through my history to create a full outline of any major issues, before asking about any changes, or concerns that I had – putting them in context. In all of these years I have never been given such clear information about any of the conditions that I have. As I seemed unclear about some of the information that was new to me, she explained everything, ironing out some misconceptions, showing me images & guiding me to sources of further information & support. She organised blood, heart & pulmonary function tests & spoke to me about immediate care & longer term options. It was an unhurried appointment, where I felt listened to & valued, all approached with a mixture of interest, concern & where appropriate humour (always good to lighten the atmosphere & put people at their ease). I left so much better informed & able to manage my situation. I now feel more confident & positive about taking back control of my health.

This was the second time I have been seen by this doctor who I found to be a refreshing change to the normal. She was open and forward in her approach, she showed genuine concern and care to me and my situation, she was un afraid to change her diagnostics after talking to me. I felt here was a person who would fight for me in getting me what ever was need to restore me back to health. On leaving her surgery I felt elated at what she was suggesting to help resolve my joint issues. May I say a real Diamond among the rough.

Cortisone injections into both elbows is not the most pleasant experience at the best of times, but Dr Al-Shakara explained everything that was going to happen and what I could expect to feel with sympathy and good humour. She was most reassuring and empathetic during the procedure and didn't at any stage make me feel as though I was making a fuss. Just what you want from a doctor in what is a very high stress situation for the patient. As is almost always the case, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be and I won't hesitate to go back to Dr Al-Shkarchi should I need a repeat procedure in the future. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

So nice to be spoken to like an intelligent human being! She was honest, helpful, and understanding. She did what she could to help in the short term, and was straightforward about the long wait I face from other departments. She was much more knowledgeable in her diagnosis than other doctors I have seen.

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the end of 2013 and was originally under a different doctor at Kingston Hospital. At my first meeting with Dr Al-Shakarchi my medication was changed which helped to improve things for me: pain levels good but still feeling exhausted. At my second appointment with her today I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. It was a great relief to talk to someone who took time to find out what my problems were, as I am very aware that I am in a better position than many patients. It was also good to know that something could be done, in terms of trying new medication, to help my situation. I am very hopeful that my situation will improve. Dr Al-Shakarchi is very good at listening and offering solutions. What more could you want from a doctor!

What a relief, after having appointment after appointment cancelled and moved back, and having been given 'questionable' advice and medical instructions from previous doctors, I have at last had an appointment with a doctor who was not only charming and friendly but put me at ease within minutes of us meeting. I was very impressed with the way my notes (previously unread by the doctor) were expertly scanned and the relevant passages checked with me and double checked to be safe. I felt a great sense of relief when the doctor's diagnosis appeared to shed a much clearer light on both my immediate and longer term medical problems and needs. I sincerely believe this doctor to be very knowledgable and I would highly recommend her.

Today was the second time I have been seen by Dr Al-Shakarchi, at Queen Mary's, Roehampton, Rheumatology Department. She has an exceptionally pleasant manner, and when one needs humour and friendliness as well as a serious competent professional approach, she gives both. She is the first doctor, consultant, medical practitioner, I have seen, who has explained everything about my present condition, with a sympathetic manner, and the first who has at least offered me treatment and medication to contain or even alleviate my painful symptoms. Her seeming interest in what is medically a minor problem that I am suffering from, is exemplary. There should be more like her in the NHS. The care, wherewithal and dedication of this doctor within the NHS, is why she exemplifies the need for the NHS and our amazing welfare state, to continue to have all our support.

I am a medical student and as part of my studies I have attended a number of clinics with Dr Al-Shakarchi. I have been consistently impressed by both her professionalism and the rapport she builds with her patients. She has a friendly and approachable manner which puts patients at ease, allows them time to explain their concerns and involves them in their management plan.

This was the first time I had seen Dr Al-Shakarchi, and she instantly put me at my ease. She was friendly, open and listened to everything I had to say. She took the time to completely review my case with me, going right back to my first diagnosis. I really felt like a person instead of just a patient. I left my appointment feeling I had seen someone who really cared. Thank you Dr Al-Shakarchi.

I had a rheumatology appointment with Dr Al-Shakarchi at Kingston hospital after referral from my GP, following some routine blood test results. I felt completely confident during my appointment and felt Dr Al-Shakarchi took time to assess my physical condition. She questioned me in some detail about any symptoms I might have and did not 'hurry me along' at any point. I left my appointment feeling informed and confident and that is a credit to Dr Al-Shakarchi.

I saw Dr Al-Shakarchi for the first time today and bearing in mind this was a late afternoon appointment she was still cheerful, quickly got up to speed on my medical history and explained what was new in arthritis treatment. When you have hospital appointments 9 to 12 months apart it can often feel like nobody is that interested in your condition but that was not the case today. A big change from my previous appointments at Kingston.

This was a first visit and I was impressed that Dr Al-Shakarchi was quick to diagnose the problem which turned out to be Psoratic Arthritis and took the time to explain how best to treat it. She seems to be very straight forward and answered all my questions professionally despite the obvious time pressure she was under. I had several visits to my GP surgery over quite some time with no diagnosis and it is a great relief to now know that there is an answer and treatment for the problem.

I had a serious flare-up of rheumatoid arthritis in my right knee which meant for a while I could hardly walk.Dr Al-Shakarchi met me after a short stay in hospital after visiting A&E and being prescribed a heavy inflammatory drug by an orthopaedic consultant which relieved the inflammation but at the cost of damaging my liver. Dr Al-Shakarchi took a highly professional approach, understanding my history and eliminating possible causes such as DVT, whilst also steering a course through hydrocortisone injections, fluid extraction and gradual reintroduction of effective medication which allowed my liver to recover and then my knee. I was particularly impressed by her thoroughness and her explanations, so I always knew the reasons behind each stage in my treatment. The thoroughness, particularly in meeting patients for the first time, meant that her clinics' times did overrun their scheduled appointment times, but a little extra time waiting seemed to me a small price to pay to then have treatment of the highest order which I knew I could trust. Dr Al-Shakarchi was new to working at Kingston, but is clearly now picking up how to get things done at the hospital. Most importantly, she is clearly a top professional and puts her patients first - and that is a hard combination to better.
