Blepharoplasty: Your go-to guide for eyelid enhancement
Autore:Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat.
Here, Dr Fas Arshad, renowned consultant plastic and ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeon, offers an expert insight into the intricacies of blepharoplasty, exploring its surgical process, potential risks, and recovery.
How is blepharoplasty performed?
I perform blepharoplasty through incisions in the skin crease of the upper and lower eyelids. As these incisions are in the skin crease, once healed, they are not easily detectable. I then reshape the muscle and fat to achieve long-term, natural results.
Can blepharoplasty correct droopy eyelids (ptosis)?
Ptosis repair is a separate procedure from blepharoplasty, but it can often be done at the same time if needed, through the same incision.
What are the potential risks and complications associated?
Blepharoplasty is a very safe and common procedure. As a head and neck surgeon, I am very comfortable operating on the face and neck.
However, as with any surgery, blepharoplasty is not completely risk-free. Bruising and swelling are relatively common in the first few days following the surgery. Visual disturbance is very rare. A small percentage of patients may also need a further tweak once healed to achieve the desired outcome.
Is blepharoplasty a painful procedure?
No, it can be done with the patient awake (under local anaesthetic) or asleep (under deep sedation). After the procedure, simple painkillers (like paracetamol) should alleviate any discomfort.
How long does it take to recover after?
The swelling and bruising usually settle within the first week. Stitches are removed after one week. After two weeks, the patient should be able to resume all usual activity.
When will I see the final results of my blepharoplasty?
Usually, in six to eight weeks.
