Botox FAQ: your questions answered
Autore:There are many different treatments available to soften lines and wrinkles, but one of the most effective and popular options is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Although Botox is also the brand name of a specific Botulinum Toxin type A product, at Dr Haus Dermatology we use Botox and other brands for face lines and face wrinkles. In his latest article, Dr Ariel Haus offers his expert insight into Botox, explaining how it works and the benefits it offers.
What is Botox and how does it work?
Botox is the brand name for a class of neurotoxins called botulinum toxin. It is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract, resulting in temporary paralysis of the injected muscle. It is most commonly used for the treatment of facial wrinkles, but it can also be used for a variety of other purposes, such as treating excessive sweating and relieving muscle spasms. There are several ways that Botox is used:
Botox on Face
Botox injections are now the most widely performed aesthetic treatment globally and in the UK. It is used to temporarily improve the appearance of the following areas of the face:
- The vertical lines between the eyebrows seen at maximum frown
- The fan-shaped lines seen at maximum smile, extending from the corner of the eyes
- The lines on the forehead seen at maximum raised eyebrows.
Therefore, Botox is effective for the treatment of glabellar lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles on the forehead.
Botox does come with some side effects, some common and some uncommon. Before your treatment commences, the likely side effects will be explained to you in detail as part of our clinic’s informed consent procedure.
Therapeutic Use of Botox
In addition to its cosmetic uses, Botox is used to treat a wide range of conditions including chronic migraine, urinary incontinence, persistent muscle spasms, and excessive sweating.
It is estimated that Botox is now more commonly used for therapeutic purposes, as opposed to cosmetic/aesthetic reasons.
How long does Botox last?
The effects of Botox typically last for three to four months. However, this can vary depending on the individual and the specific area being treated. Some people may find that the effects of Botox last longer, while others may notice that the effects wear off more quickly.
Is Botox safe?
Botox injections are the number one non-surgical aesthetic treatment worldwide and Botox has been extensively studied over the last 20 years and has been found to be safe when used as directed. It is important to be treated by a trained and qualified healthcare professional to ensure that the injections are administered properly and to minimize the risk of side effects.
Patient safety is a top priority for us, and we strongly believe that Botox treatments should not be carried out by anyone without the appropriate medical qualifications, training and experience. As such only experienced dermatologists and registered nurses perform Botox treatments at Dr Haus Dermatology.
What are the side effects of Botox?
The most common side effects of Botox are mild and temporary and may include pain or swelling at the injection site, headache, and flu-like symptoms.
Rare but serious side effects can occur, including difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing. It is important to discuss any concerns that you may have about potential side effects with the person who is going to be treating you.
Is Botox painful?
Most people find that the injections are relatively painless. Some people may experience a slight pinching or stinging sensation during the injections, but this is usually mild and temporary. A numbing cream or ice can be used to minimise any discomfort.
