We had the chance not so long ago to talk to esteemed London-based consultant dermatologist, Dr Sunil Chopra, who, in our latest article here, details what platelet-rich plasma therapy and Fraxel laser treatment are, and tells us what both can do for one’s skin.
Can you detail what platelet-rich plasma therapy is?
Platelet-rich plasma therapy is when blood is withdrawn (usually from the arm) and is put in centrifuge in order to separate the plasma from the platelets. The platelets are then removed and then injected into the scalp or the skin. The platelets themselves have many growth factors, which promote the growth of collagen, new blood vessels, as well as the repair of nerves. It also helps hair follicles become healthier, and as a result, patients grow healthier, thicker hair.
Who is the ideal candidate for platelet-rich plasma therapy?
The ideal candidate for platelet-rich plasma is someone who does not want anything too invasive. We mainly use platelet-rich plasma therapy for rejuvenation of the skin, to make it look younger, to reduce wrinkles, and to reduce fine lines.
We also use it on the scalp to make the hair look healthier and thicker. We can also use it in certain medical conditions, such as alopecia areata where patients can lose their scalp, facial and body hair. We can also use it in leg ulcers and burns.
What are the associated risks or side effects?
The main potential side effects are infection, bruising and/or swelling.
What does Fraxel laser treatment treat?
Fraxel laser treatment is used to rejuvenate the skin, and is also commonly used to treat scarring caused by acne.
With regards to Fraxel laser treatment, what should patients be aware of?
Patients have to be aware that, during the entire Fraxel treatment process, they must always wear sunscreen in the sun. They cannot have Fraxel laser treatment if they have a tan, and they also have to make sure that, after the laser treatment, they protect themselves from the sun as much as they possibly can.
How many times will I need Fraxel laser treatment?
The Fraxel laser may be only required once. However, if the patient has quite severe scarring, you may need between two and four treatments with the Fraxel laser. When it comes to rejuvenation, it's all a matter of one's opinion. One is always happy after one treatment, but further treatment can also improve the outcome even more.
I often find that after the sixth Fraxel laser treatment, the improvement tends to come to a plateau, and for that reason, I tend to limit it to six treatments in any one course. Of course, you can repeat the Fraxel laser treatment at any time in the future, in order to rejuvenate your skin.
