Neck lumps are, in the majority of cases, caused by one's lymph nodes (or lymph glands) becoming swollen. In our latest article, revered consultant ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon, Mr Churunal Hari, outlines the main symptoms of neck lumps and reveals how they are most effectively treated.
What are neck lumps and what causes them to form?
Neck lumps are very common in adults and can occur for various reasons. Many adults may develop throat infections or a cold, which typically affects the lymph nodes. We call this a lymph gland or lymph node enlargement.
Neck lumps can often be associated with a sore throat, tonsillitis, as well as a dental or ear infection. Another typical cause of neck lumps is a thyroid gland swelling, often located in the lower neck.
If the neck swelling does come from an infection, it should go away completely as soon as the infection goes. Neck lumps can also be caused by cancerous swellings, which can present themselves in the form of lymphoma, salivary gland tumours, or throat cancers.
What are the main symptoms of neck lumps/neck swelling?
Sometimes, patients do not experience any symptoms at all. However, when they do, the most common symptoms include the following:
sore throat fever and sweating pain change in voice
When should patients seek medical attention?
If the neck swelling continues after two to three weeks, or if the neck lump swelling becomes larger in this period of time, it most definitely requires medical attention. Patients may also need to see an ENT specialist if they are experiencing throat symptoms, such as a sore throat or a voice change.
How are neck lumps managed?
Neck lumps are often investigated through a clinical examination, an ultrasound scan, and occasionally, a needle biopsy, which can be carried out to determine the cause of the swelling.
