This latest medical article discusses rhinoplasty surgery at length, including an outline of the main benefits associated with the nose procedure. Here to give us an insightful guide into the procedure is esteemed consultant cosmetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgeon, Mr Lucian Ion.
What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons, functional improvement, or both.
What are the main benefits of undergoing a rhinoplasty?
The three main benefits of having a rhinoplasty are as follows:
Aesthetic enhancement: Rhinoplasty allows individuals to achieve their desired nasal appearance. Whether it’s reshaping the bridge, refining the tip, or correcting asymmetry, this procedure enhances facial harmony. Improved breathing: For those with breathing difficulties due to a deviated septum or other structural issues, rhinoplasty can significantly enhance airflow. It is then also known as septo-rhinoplasty. Boosted confidence: A well-proportioned nose can positively impact self-esteem and overall confidence.
When is rhinoplasty needed or considered?
The procedure is performed for people seeking aesthetic improvements, such as reducing a prominent hump, narrowing wide nostrils, or refining the nasal tip. It can also be of benefit for people with breathing difficulties caused by a deviated septum, nasal valve collapse, or other anatomical abnormalities, development or post-traumatic.
What are the associated risks?
There are, unfortunately, quite a number of risks associated with rhinoplasty surgery. These include:
Nosebleeds Septal perforation Breathing problems Altered sense of smell or taste Skin discoloration Need for revision surgery Infection Asymmetry
What does recovery from rhinoplasty entail?
Most patients can leave the hospital on the same day as surgery. An overnight stay may be elected by patients, but is rarely necessary. People who have undergone this procedure should plan for approximately one week off from work or other responsibilities. Swelling reduces faster in the first few weeks after surgery, but most patients won't see the full extent of the results until after one year.
In terms of results, what can patients expect?
While initial swelling reduces within weeks, it may take up to a year for the new nasal contour to fully refine. In the presence of thicker nasal skin, the result can take two years to reach its full potential.
