Revered Greater Manchester-based consultant general surgeon Mr Nicola de Liguori-Carino, reveals just how metastatic liver cancer treatment can effectively prevent spreading to other organs of the body, and what exactly metastatic colorectal cancer to the liver surgery involves.

What is the most effective treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer to the liver?

The most effective treatment, whenever possible, is surgical resection of the metastatic deposit of colorectal cancer in the liver.

Can you detail what the treatment process entails?

We’re talking about surgery to remove part of the liver, where the metastatic deposits of colorectal cancer are lodged. The surgery is known as a liver resection. It is a highly-complicated and highly-specialised type of surgery.

The surgery can be performed with an open approach, where an incision is made in the abdomen. Or, in some cases, laparoscopic surgery can be performed. Regardless of the technique that is used, the aim of the surgery is to remove the multiple deposits of the tumour.

It is performed under general anaesthesia, and it is surgery that can have a significant impact on the organism. There is a low risk of complication and mortality. Recovery can take anywhere between three days to two weeks on average.

In what ways can other parts of the body be affected by metastatic liver cancer?

The lungs can also be affected by metastatic liver cancer. Very rarely are any other organs affected. When the disease is localised in the liver only, there is hope when it comes to cure, but it is more complicated when the disease has spread to the lungs. It can be spread from the liver to the lungs, and vice versa.

Can metastatic liver cancer treatment prevent the spread of it to other body parts? If so, how?

Yes, absolutely. Surgical resection allows us to remove the tumour. Early diagnosis is key. Chemotherapy also helps prevent the spread of the metastatic liver cancer to other body parts.
