What is coital pain (vaginismus)?

Vaginismus is the involuntary contraction of the muscles of the vagina that causes it to close during sex, causing pain and coital intercourse difficult or impossible.

 

 

What are the symptoms of coital pain?

The most common symptoms are pain during penetration or during a pelvic exam. It is a rare disease, which in most cases have psychological causes as trauma or sexual abuse in the past, fear of pregnancy or a history of discomfort during intercourse.

 

What is the treatment?

There is no single treatment, but a combination of several, led by a specialist in sex therapy to educate and advise on the problem. Kegel exercises, which consist of the contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles are also recommended.
