ADHD assessment

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects individuals' ability to focus, control impulses, and regulate behaviour. ADHD can significantly impact academic performance, social interactions, and daily functioning. Dr Annique Clopon provides a comprehensive assessment and diagnosis.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

Symptoms of ADHD can manifest differently in individuals, but commonly include:

Inattention:

Difficulty sustaining focus, being easily distracted, making careless mistakes, struggling to follow instructions, and forgetfulness.

Hyperactivity:

Restlessness, excessive fidgeting, talking excessively, difficulty staying seated, and constant movement.

Impulsivity:

Acting without thinking, interrupting others, blurting out answers, difficulty waiting for turns, and impatience.

What is included in the ADHD assessment?

The ADHD assessment is a structured medical evaluation conducted by Dr Annique Clopon, a qualified psychologist.

The assessment includes the following components:

Structured medical assessment:

The psychologist will undertake a comprehensive evaluation of mental health, including a thorough examination of your mental health history. This involves exploring any existing mental health conditions that may coexist or mimic ADHD symptoms.

Pre-assessment information:

The psychologist will expand on the questions asked in the pre-assessment forms to gain a deeper understanding of your past experiences and symptoms. It is essential to feel comfortable during the assessment process, and if there are any questions you prefer not to answer, your psychologist will respect your boundaries.

Time constraints and structure:

Due to time limitations, the assessment follows a structured format to ensure all diagnostic criteria are assessed. In-depth discussions may be limited during the initial appointment, but you can provide additional information or concerns through a case note on your portal for the doctor's attention.

Diagnosis and treatment discussion:

Following the assessment, your psychologist will discuss their findings and provide a diagnosis. Additional information or investigations may be needed before a conclusive diagnosis can be made. The psychologist will also discuss recommended treatment options tailored to your specific needs.

How long does the ADHD assessment take?

The ADHD assessment typically lasts approximately 50 minutes. Within this time, the psychologist conducts a structured medical assessment, reviews your mental health history, and explores your symptoms. While the time may seem limited, the assessment package ensures that essential diagnostic criteria are evaluated thoroughly.

What happens after the ADHD assessment?

Following the assessment, your psychologist will provide a letter to your GP with the findings. This is necessary

If there is any information you prefer not to include in the letter, please let your psychologist know during the assessment. This can be omitted if it is not relevant to the diagnosis, and at the clinician's discretion.

You will be given a copy of the letter.
