Early pregnancy package
The Early Pregnancy Care package provided by Mr Keith Duncan, an esteemed and highly-experienced consultant obstetrician and fetal medicine specialist, gives peace of mind that the health of your baby is as good as can be, and that you are in expert hands to ensure your pregnancy and delivery are as worry-free as possible.
What does the Early Pregnancy Care package include?
The Early Pregnancy Care package with Mr Keith Duncan includes the following:
- Consultation - Mr Duncan will take a careful history of your pregnancy, your pre-conception health, and previous health issues you may have experienced, a family history, a baby abnormailty check (testing for any disorders or health defects during the first trimester).
- Early pregnancy ultrasound - this is a transvaginal ultrasound that checks the health of your reproductive organs (uterus, cervix, vagina).
- HCG and progesterone blood test - hCG (often referred to as the pregnancy hormone) are cells that are formed in the placenta, and alongside the progesterone blood test, help to give a clear indication of the health of your baby.
What happens during the ultrasound procedure?
The transvaginal ultrasound is an important scan to have during the early stages of your pregnancy. The transvaginal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to generate images of your reproductive organs and the developing foetus.
Unlike the traditional ultrasound procedure, where the ultrasound device is placed on the abdomen, the transvaginal ultrasound involves placing a wand-like instrument into the vaginal canal. This produces a much clearer and more detailed view of the uterus, particularly in the early stages of pregnancy.

What is the HCG and progesterone test for?
The progesterone blood test assesses the levels of progesterone in the blood stream. This helps in the early identification of causes of infertility in women. The test also serves to track ovulation and diagnose such conditions as ectopic or failing pregnancy.
Progesterone is a hormone produced in the ovaries during ovulation, and plays a crucial role in preparing the uterine lining (endometrium) for fertilisation. If fertilisation does not occur, then progesterone levels decrease, triggering menstrual bleeding. During pregnancy, the placenta produces high levels of progesterone, much higher than those in non-pregnant women, which is a signifier of the status of your pregnancy.
As your progesterone levels fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, the progesterone blood test aids in identifying infertility causes. They can pinpoint the timing of ovulation and monitor the success of induced ovulation.
In early pregnancy, these tests can help to diagnose ectopic or failing pregnancy, while in high-risk pregnancies, they help in monitoring the health of the placenta and foetus.
You are not required to abstain from food or drink before the blood test, and you will usually receive the results within one to two days following the test. You do not require a doctor's referral and an order from your medical insurance to order the test.
