Prostate MRI package
The Prostate MRI package provided by The Urology Partnership, at The Forbury Clinic in Reading, is a magnetic resonance imaging test that provides detailed images of the prostate, helping to diagnose prostate cancer and other prostate conditions, giving you a clear diagnosis and a plan going forward to treat any detected issues.
What does a prostate MRI involve?
During the prostate MRI examination, you will lie on a bed that is part of the MRI scanner, the bed will then enter the scanner, allowing the technician to take detailed magnetic resonance images of your prostate.
Once the scan is complete, a consultant radiologist at The Urology Partnership will examine the images, and determine the precise size and lcoation of any anomalies. This precision allows for targeted biopsies of suspected cancer, leading to more accurate sampling and an earlier diagnosis. Having a prostate MRI can avoid the need to have a prostate biopsy at all.
The prostate MRI package from The Urology Partnership also includes a consultation with a specialist urologist.

How does a prostate MRI compare with a PSA test?
Prostate cancer is highly prevalent, particularly among men aged over 50, those with a family history, and those of black ethnicity. While the PSA test is currently used for diagnosis, it is associated with overdiagnosis and overtreatment of low-risk cases.
A recent BMJ Oncology study underscores the effectiveness of MRI scans in diagnosis. One in six men showed signs of prostate cancer on MRI, even with normal PSA levels. This indicates that relying solely on PSA may lead to false reassurances.
