What is migraine surgery and how effective is it? See more
Migraines are a type of headache characterised by a throbbing pain, usually to one side of the head. You may also experience nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and an aura (visual problems). Some people can experience migraines chronically (several times a week), causing huge disruption to peoples' lives.
Migraine surgery is a treatment that can reduce the frequency of migraine episodes and the severity of each attack. The procedure involves releasing certain nerves at targetted trigger points, which may be at the temple, forehead or back of the head. It is a relatively low-risk procedure, usually carried out with local anaesthetic as a day-case procedure.
In terms of its effectiveness, migraine surgery can completely eradicate migraines in up to 60% of patients. It can reduce the number of episodes in up to 90% of patients.
