Mr Andrew Coombes

Professional statement

Mr Andrew Coombes is a consultant eye surgeon based in London, specialising in oculoplastic procedures, cosmetic ophthalmology and cataract surgery alongside blepharoplasty, outpatient eyelid surgery and dry eye. He also has top expertise in eye trauma. Mr Coombes privately practices at HCA UK at The Shard and London Bridge Hospital. His NHS base is at the Royal London Hospital for Barts Health NHS Trust. Here, he is the current lead consultant for the Adnexal (eyelid, tear drainage and orbital disorders) and cataract and corneal services.

Mr Coombes' clinical experience also extends to other top roles at the trust. He was the department lead clinician from 2004 to 2016 and Trust ophthalmology clinical director from 2012 to 2016. Now, he is the college tutor and education supervisor there.  

Mr Coombes is highly qualified, with an MBBS from St Bartholomew's Medical College (1991), where he won several prestigious prizes, and an immunology BSc from St Thomas' Hospital (1989).

After graduating from St Bartholomew's, he underwent further training in his subspecialisms via fellowships at Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital. He also gained an even broader ophthalmic repertoire in glaucoma, medical retina and strabismus as well as paediatrics and neuro-ophthalmology subspecialities as part of the ophthalmology SpR Rotation at Moorfields Eye Hospital, St George's NHS Trust and the south west Thames region. 

Mr Coombes' clinical research has been published widely in scientific journals and as a sole author and contributor to several books, most notably in the field of cataract and trauma. He is actively involved in teaching both under- and post-graduates and is regularly invited to lecture, particularly on the subject of ocular and orbital trauma. He has also presented his findings for various respected associations in the ophthalmology field, including the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (BOPSS).
