Pancreatic cancer - whipple procedure How do you thank the man thats just saved your life? I was eventually diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after months of tests and scans ruling out everything else via my local GP/hospital. I was 57 years old and otherwise fit and healthy and virtually no symptoms other than a change in my bowel habits. Unfortunately, having experienced the pace that the NHS was able to move at with all of the pressures they’re under and being told that time is critical with Pancreatic cancer, I decided to explore the private options outside of my area which was when I came across Nic. I googled the best Pancreatic surgeons in the UK and amongst a few others at the Royal Marsden, Christy…his name appeared. After reading everyone’s reviews and following a personal recommendation from someone who knew Nic, I decided to make contact. He was on a family holiday at the time but still responded via his secretary (Amira) to arrange a consultation the day he returned. He requested copies of all of my tests and scans including MRI, CT, PET etc ahead of the meeting and from what I understand, he reviewed them with his team the morning he returned. I have to be honest, I have never been more scared in my life when we met on that Monday evening because up until that point nobody had explained to me what (if anything) my options were and I believed that I was about to be told that I had reached the end of my life. Nic turned out to be one of the most empathetic, caring and all round wonderful people that I have ever had the pleasure to meet and most importantly, he told me that he was able to operate. He explained in just enough detail for me what the operation was going to involve and that it was known as the Whipple procedure and when he asked if I wanted to go ahead I immediately agreed. Quite incredibly, he decided to add an additional slot in theatre the following Monday, so I had gone from a long drawn out diagnosis (circa 5 months) to my first consultation with Nic, pre-op and into theatre in less than a week. The operation is quite a long procedure and not without the obvious risks, but I went into that operation bursting with confidence in not only Nic but the fantastic team he works with at the Alexandra hospital. When I came out of theatre later that day, Nic personally contacted my wife and family to give them the update and to let them know that they had managed to remove all of the cancer and that I was recovering well in ICU. Every day thereafter until I left hospital 12 days later, Nic visited me to make sure that I was still recovering well. Even on his days off!! It may be worth pointing out at this stage that I suffer quite badly from health anxiety and made Nic aware of that at the beginning, so he always framed his answers to any of my questions in a way that would only ever give me more hope and confidence. All I would say to anyone that is fortunate enough to get an operation in the first place, in my experience there’s nobody better out there than this man. He cares about his patients like they are his own children and is incredibly talented, understanding and with a bedside manner like no other. For the patient, this operation is all about having the confidence and strength to get through it and Nic and his team will give you that in abundance. If you are reading this review and feeling as worried, scared and lost as I was, I’m sure Amira would be happy to put us in touch so I can share more of my experience. Good luck and you will beat this as long as you don’t waste any time and most importantly, you stay confident. Martyn (Newcastle) ❤️
