Professor Alok Tiwari is a consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon practising at Midland Health in Birmingham. He has expertise in the treatment of varicose veins, peripheral arterial disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms, anterior lumbar interbody fusion, carotid artery disease, and diabetic foot.
Professor Tiwari completed his undergraduate medical studies in 1996 at the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and undertook basic surgical training at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Essex. In 2003, he completed a Master of Surgery degree with a thesis on hybrid cardiovascular graft development at the Royal Free Hospital in London. During his specialist general and vascular training, Professor Tiwari became a vascular fellow in Sydney, Australia at the Westmead Vascular Unit, learning minimally invasive techniques such as angioplasty and endovascular aneurysm repair, and has further worked a year in Singapore where he gained experience with complex diabetic foot disease. He has been a consultant surgeon since 2011, and developed the diabetic foot service at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
Professor Tiwari is a keen researcher and educator. He is a Visiting Professor of vascular surgery at Birmingham City University, and was an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham from 2018 to 2022, and has more than 100 publications in his name, ranging from book chapters to articles on all aspects of vascular surgery. His current research interests are on mechanisms for atherosclerosis and diabetic foot. Professor Tiwari tailors care for each of his patients, offering both open and minimally invasive procedures.
