Professional statement

Mr Chris Cartlidge is a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon based in Edinburgh, specialising in breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast uplifts. He privately practices at Dr Nestor's Medical Cosmetic Centre and his NHS bases are NHS Fife and NHS Forth Valley.

Mr Cartlidge takes care to ensure his patients get the right treatment and benefit from results they are happy with. He works closely with fellow professionals, prioritising patient ideas, concerns and their outcome hopes, in order to come to decisions about the best way to manage cases.

He is part of a pioneering team that recently became the first in Scotland to use a new surgical technique which enables patients undergoing a mastectomy to be discharged the same day, rather than the standard overnight stay.

Mr Cartlidge, who undertakes various breast reconstruction procedures including implant reconstruction, pedicled flap and fat transfer, also performs operations for correcting asymmetry following breast cancer treatment and revisional breast surgery. This includes breast salvage following surgical complications and removal of breast implants with total capsulectomy.

He has also trained in chest wall reconstruction for gender reassignment, working to the guidelines of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH).

Mr Cartlidge, who also specialises in breast cancer surgery and benign breast disease, has an impressive list of medical educational achievements. He graduated with a first class BSc (Hons) in Pathology in 2003 and MB ChB (Hons) in 2006 from Edinburgh University, winning gold medals in both Surgery and Medicine. He then went onto further specialist training in south east Scotland, which included two years working under Professor Mike Dixon OBE at the Edinburgh Breast Unit.

Mr Cartlidge's research has been published in various peer-reviewed journals and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, with an MRCS and FRCS, and the National Oncoplastic Fellowship at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. He has also been involved in passing his expert knowledge on to future medical professionals, lecturing in Surgery for the University of Edinburgh from 2012 to 2018.
