Endometriosis, Adenomyosis and Hysteroscopies webinar
Description:
Ilyas Arshad - Consultant Gynaecologist, Denise Carter - Endometriosis Specialist Nurse and Karen Loy - Gynaecology Specialist Nurse & Hysteroscopist. This webinar has been reviewed by the Endometriosis UK’s Specialist Advisor and external medical advisors following complaints it contains incorrect information. The complaints related to this statement made in the webinar: Mirena is a really good first line treatment to also help diagnose endometriosis because if the pain settles it can give a good indication that it could be down to endometriosis. what we don’t want, we don’t want to be doing a lot of surgical treatments on really young ladies, so it is a good diagnostic tool as well”. This comment was made in the context of treating young women (teenagers) who were originally treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Once they turned 18, they were sent to Liverpool Women’s Hospital to continue their care, many of them at the time did not have an official diagnosis. This comment was followed by further discussion about health professional concern about performing a lot of surgical procedures on young women. Mirena coil was given as one type of indicator for suspected endometriosis for a specific group (teenagers and very young women) rather than a definitive diagnostic tool for all those with endometriosis. In the interest of delivering clear information, our medical advisory panel have stated that Mirena coil can indicate that the symptom of pain is related to hormones but cannot give a diagnosis of endometriosis or adenomyosis.
