Dr Jayesh Makan is a leading consultant cardiologist based in Shrewsbury. He diagnoses and treats patients with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, heart rhythm disturbances and blackouts. He has developed a special interest in sports cardiology and is currently studying for an MSc in the subject, having been awarded a full scholarship by St George’s Hospital, University of London. His private clinic is based at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, while his NHS practice is at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.
Dr Makan trained at Guy's and St Thomas' qualifying with MBBS and a BSc (Hons) in Immunology. His specialist training in cardiology was in London and he spent three years as a Specialist Registrar at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust. He developed an expertise in pacemaker, defibrillator and biventricular pacemaker implantation and is a Certified Cardiac Device Specialist with the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners.
Dr Makan joined Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust as a consultant in 2011 and set up a brand new complex cardiac device service for Shropshire. He was appointed as the Clinical Director of Cardiology in 2013 and led the department for nearly ten years, before taking up a role as Undergraduate Tutor for Keele University Medical School. Furthermore, he has recently been appointed as an Honorary Consultant Cardiology at St George’s Hospital, London and has also been recognised as a Covid-19 Hero at his NHS trust for his work during the pandemic.
Dr Makan is active in clinical academia. Between 2003 and 2005, he undertook research with Professor Sanjay Sharma, who is a world leader in Sports Cardiology and Inherited Cardiac Disease. His research was funded by the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and he was honoured to be appointed a Trustee of the charity in 2018. He is a keen athlete and runner and completed the London Marathon for Greenwich Hospice in 2000 and for CRY in 2022.
His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, he has authored book chapters and presented at international meetings. He is a member of a number of professional organisations, including the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners, the European Heart Rhythm Association and he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
