Professor Jonathan Roos is an internationally renowned consultant ophthalmologist, oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon based in London and Cambridge. He specialises in blepharoplasty and all areas of eyelid surgery, including the treatment of periocular skin cancer. He is additionally expert in treating ptosis (droopy eye), dark circles and other non surgical facial aesthetics. Professor Roos also specialises in a range of innovative treatments using light technology to treat dry eye including OptiLight.
In partnership with highly respected fellow consultant ophthalmologist, oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr Rachna Murthy, Professor Roos established Face Restoration, a leading centre for excellence in facial aesthetics and diseases of the eye and eyelids. They are a highly respected duo of international renown who together have over fifty years of experience in the field. The pair seamlessly work as a team, using a unique approach to optimise results and ensure patient safety. The duo see all of their patients together, meaning that in every consultation, their patients benefit from a second expert opinion. Dr Murthy and Professor Roos also utilise the latest technology in every step of their treatment, with each consultation including 3D photo imaging and skin analysis with VISIA.
Using their expert knowledge, they have also developed Purifeyes™, a microbial and pH balanced periocular skin and eye cleanser. They two specialists also work as a team to train other aesthetic specialists on a course based in Cambridge to promote best practice, safety and excellent patient outcomes.
Professor Roos has an extensive academic background at the University of Cambridge, where he obtained a double first-class bachelor’s degree in surgery and medicine, as well as a master’s degree and a PhD. During this time, he also undertook a period of research at Harvard Medical School. Following this, he was awarded fellowships from the European Board of Ophthalmology, the British Oculoplastic Surgical Society, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the American and European Societies of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, an achievement unique to Professor Roos. After spending numerous years in training and service at the renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital and within Ipswich and Cambridge NHS Foundation Trust, he took his passion for excellent patient care into private practice, both as a cofounder and specialist practitioner at Face Restoration.
As a leading expert in his field, Professor Roos is a valued educator for colleagues and trainee oculoplastic surgeons. He is a visiting lecturer at both the Università degli Studi di Milano and Mario Negri Institute’s pharmaceutical master’s programme in Bergamo and additionally teaches courses on safety in aesthetic and cosmetic surgery in the UK.
Professor Roos’ excellence in clinical research has been recognised with numerous prizes and awards throughout his esteemed career from the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society, the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the International Thyroid Eye Disease Society amongst others. In 2019, he won a both a global meeting prize and best British paper in oculoplastic surgery at an international conference of specialists held in Singapore. His academic work is widely published in leading medical journals and he has contributed to multiple textbooks on oculo-plastic surgery. He is an elected fellow and member of numerous esteemed societies within his field of expertise and until recently was president of the young section of the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Professor Roos’ vast experience stems from numerous senior positions he has held internationally and he is board certified in several countries, including Switzerland and Sweden. He has also engaged in charitable projects as a visiting oculoplastic surgeon for children at Ruharo Eye Centre in Uganda. He is a fluent speaker of English, Swedish, German, Swiss German and French.
