Professional statement
Dr Maciej Danilewicz is a consultant psychiatrist who specialises in adult psychiatry, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction.
After graduating from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland with his medical degree in 1997, Dr Danilewicz then completed his post-graduate degree in cognitive psychotherapy at Oxford University. In 2013 he completed a post-graduate degree in psychiatry at Cardiff University.
Amongst his special interests is the recognition, management and treatment of substance misuse amongst patients suffering from major mental illness and development and efficacy assessment of the services.
Dr Danilewicz is on the Myogenes genetic testing panel and specialises in prescribing for the psychiatric part of the DNA test. This method can improve approximately 80% of the accuracy in prescribing medication.
Following the test, Dr Danilewicz can suggest the choice of medication based on configuration of the receptors in the brain and activity of the liver.
This almost eliminates the trial and error often found in prescribing and shortens the time to find the right medication for the person.
It is very important for people who are off work due to psychiatric disorders, for example, those who suffer from depression, as he can suggest an antidepressant that works. This is called pharmacogenomic prescribing and is sometimes known as personalised medicine.
