Plastic surgery is the medical specialty associated with performing cosmetic or aesthetic surgery to improve or change physical appearance, but also reconstructive plastic surgery, which can restore function and appearance after injury, accident or illness. You might also be treated by a plastic surgeon if you were born with a physical abnormality, or if you had undergone cancer surgery and required reconstruction (e.g. oncoplastic breast reconstruction following a mastectomy). Lastly, if you were unhappy with an element of your physical appearance, you might want to consult a cosmetic plastic surgeon to see if your appearance could be changed, which for some people may improve their self-esteem, confidence and quality of life.
