Professor Swaran Singh is a distinguished consultant psychiatrist based in the West Midlands who specialises in youth and adult mental health. With more than 30 years of experience in the NHS, Professor Singh is internationally renowned for his specialist expertise in psychosis, schizophrenia, ethnic minority mental health and somatoform disorders alongside bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress (PTSD). Professor Singh started his professional trajectory in mental health care after witnessing the effects of ethnic conflict-related trauma on children. Having initially qualified as a surgeon, Professor Singh completed specialist training in psychiatry at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research before relocating to the UK in 1991.
Since then, Professor Singh has been closely involved in the development of mental health services, leading three major reforms in mental health policy in the past three decades - aimed at improving aid for BAME communities, establishing early intervention programmes for psychosis, and supporting the transition between child, adolescent and adult mental health care. His research has influenced mental health policy and practice in the UK, Australia, Canada and several European countries. He has also implemented evidence-based reforms of services in the Indian subcontinent and sub-Saharan Africa.
Professor Singh was a commissioner for the Equality and Human Rights Commission (2013-19), a Commissioner for the West Midlands Combined Authority Mental Health Commission (2015-17) and Clinical Lead for the Mental Health and Social Care, West Midlands Strategic Health Authority (2007-10). Professor Singh also notably led The Singh Investigation in 2021 into alleged discrimination within the Conservative and Unionist Party.
Professor Singh is also the recipient of a National Gold Award for Clinical Excellence in the NHS. He has published over 350 scientific papers. As a leading figure in mental health care, Professor Singh is also regularly featured in the media and is invited to speak at international conferences. His work has featured on the BBC, CNN, TIME and many other major media organisations.
