Mr Patel is an outstanding Doctor of the highest calibre. From our first meeting he installed me with confidence. He has a rare ability in being able to deliver difficult and complex information in a calm and easy to understand manner. Everything was carefully explained, with all possible outcomes. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Patel and the National Health Service (NHS) for the surgery and care I received. After a two-year wait on the waiting list, Mr. Patel kindly agreed to take over my case. While the extended wait time was understandably frustrating, particularly given the unfortunate last-minute cancellations due to a previous consultant's departure from the NHS, I appreciate the complexities involved. Thankfully, the surgery under Mr. Patel's care proceeded smoothly, and I was discharged after five days following this intensive procedure. I am deeply grateful to Mr. Patel, the entire surgical team, and all NHS staff for their expertise and dedication throughout my pre-operative, operative, and post-operative care.

Firstly his PA is excellent. She responded to me on a Saturday evening and arranged for me to see Mr Patel on Monday afternoon (2 days later) Mr Patel then listened to me and quickly diagnosed the problem after a clinical examination. Surgery was required and he then went out of his way to find the first available theatre at a few locations. Surgery went very well and my recovery, under his watch, went better than expected. For that I say thank you Mr Patel and Rohina. I’d recommend to anyone if asked.

I was very impressed with Mr Patel. He spent a good amount of time both before surgery and afterwards, explaining the procedure and subsequent findings. At all times, it was clear that he was a good listener and his calm and authoritive manner was very reassuring. I was also impressed with his embracing of new techniques such as the use of robotics. My wife was particularly impressed that he took time, after my surgery, to ring her to tell her that the operation had gone well and to reassure her.

I found Dr Patel to be concise, easy to understand (no medical tech speak) and sincerely caring. He put me at rest from the first line of our conversation saying "Hi My name is Vanash" I found these little touches to be comforting especially as the topic was my Rectal Cancer diagnosis. The operation went so well I was discharged in under 5 days, with a full recovery outcome, whereas a friend of mine having a similar operation was in hospital for a month. I couldn't recommend him enough and feel blessed to have him as my surgeon.

On the morning of admittance to Watford General Hospital, having said goodbye to my wife I was sitting in the waiting area and feeling very anxious when Mr. Patel came and invited me to join him in a small room. We spent ten minutes talking about different aspects of my operation. I was made to feel very much at ease and that I was in safe hands. Whilst in the recovery ward, Mr Patel visited me to let me know that the operation went well with no complications, which I appreciated and found very reassuring. Whilst on the ward I felt well cared for with a big thank you to Laura and Larissa.

I visited Mr Patel with some concerns following previous bowel surgery. He was friendly and understanding. He suggested some tests and as I had a holiday booked he organised for my results to be sent to him urgently. Thankfully all was ok and I was reassured by my visits to him. He explained to me very clearly what the problem with my apendix was and made me feel at ease about the upcoming operation. My assessment with Mr. Patel was very straight forward, considerate and clear in his approach. The following investigations were carried out quickly, with excellent explanation as he did in discussing the pros and cons undertaking the surgery. I was treated with respect and dignity throughout the whole process and support was taken to provide provision for my after care. I have made a complete recovery with very neat scarring. Vanash operated on my 85 year old aunt robotically and successfully. This meant no large wounds and no dressings to be changed - fantastic. He talked us through the whole procedure - the positives and the negatives and what might go wrong - thankfully nothing did. Everything went smoothly and at the follow up appointment he assured her that it was a smaller growth than expected and there would be no further treatment. Just a yearly scan. He put her mind at rest. Thank you. I would add that in the section below there is nowhere to put "I am a relative/next of kin" so please note I am not the service user/patient!!!

In the middle of the horrible experience of coming to terms with my husband's cancer diagnosis, the first meeting with Vanesh was reassuringly positive. Not because there were any promises to immediately banish the cancer, but because the explanations of what was wrong were clearly given, and the treatment concisely described, with rough diagrams drawn to further iterate the plan of action. I'd gone into this meeting very concerned that my husband was going to the right hospital to get the best care. I had reservations and had been advised by friends that a different hospital nearby was a world centre of excellence. By the end of the meeting, I still wasn't sure about the hospital itself, but at least I felt confident that my husband would be in the hands of a good surgeon. As Vanesh proved to be. He did a great job. My husband was given a lot of written info, much of which he hasn't used. But some of the things we needed to know weren't covered. Also, we were given this written info at the meeting with Vanesh but kind of left hanging a bit initially, after my husband had been told at the colonoscopy stage that he had a big tumour that was likely malignant. Cue complete shock and horror. We managed to finally get to see the GP on the Friday before the Monday hospital appointment with Vanesh. This was two weeks after my husband had his colonoscopy. We asked the GP about process (and options for care because we didn't know if there were any. By which I mean patient choice in terms of care team and hospital). The GP was very nice but not able to help much. Then we asked about the MRI and found out that at least there hadn't been any other tumours discovered. But we wouldn't have been told at that point if we hadn't asked, and this was something that gave us some hope, which we really needed. We then erroneously told the GP that the hospital appointment was with the radiotherapist and asked about that. Of course it was with Vanesh, not with a radiotherapist, just in the radiotherapy department. Very confusing. We thought they were going to try to shrink the tumour before operating. Obviously you speculate when you don't have the information. So the main thing that he would have found useful (rather than the Macmillan stuff and offers of counselling, in his case, because clearly some people would feel differently), was some written down mapping of the probable route of the treatment from diagnosis, the likely tests on the way, and the people who would guide that process. From operation to recovery and then to chemotherapy (if chemotherapy indicated - and what would inform that? We didn't know and hadn't thought to ask) with a rough indication of average timescales and what personnel are seen at each test and milestone? In our heads we'd only taken in the info about the operation to remove the big tumour. There could also be better information for spouses/carers given at that first meeting. How to get in and out of the ward for example (I got stuck in the airlock for a few minutes after the first visit, not realising there was no push release to get through the outer door and no bell or intercom anywhere. Good job I wasn't claustrophobic, apparently it was previously the covid ward and the doors were modified, but what would happen in a fire?). Then post-op I'd given my mobile number for the hospital to tell me how my husband was doing. Unfortunately, I'd forgotten that long before, maybe when I first got the phone, I'd blocked number withheld numbers. It took me a while to work this out as I couldn't hear it ring even though the volume was on high. Then I stared at it until I could see another call coming through, and I still couldn't answer because the phone wouldn't let me. I imagine I might not be the only stupid person who has set their phone so it can't ring or be answered if it's a no number call. And then forgotten. So maybe a point worth mentioning when taking an emergency contact number. OK bottom line, thank you to Vanesh and his team, my husband recovered well from the operation and he liked all the people caring for him. Good result. Now I'm praying the rest will go as good.

Had a day surgery at the Spire Bushey Hospital performed and under the care of Mr. V. Patel and very satisfied. Mr. Patel did managed my condition and exceeded my expectation from my first consultation, surgery, discharge, recovery and end result. I have undergone previous medical procedure and rate Mr. V. Vanash has what can be described as a perfect "bedside manner" and the fact that I am using his first name is a testimony to this. Our first meeting, clearly not at the bedside, was in September last year (2021) when he explained to me how he was going to deal with the tumor I was diagnosed with (adenocarcinoma of the upper rectum). He made it clear that it was a serious operation but in a manner that was confident of success. Watford General does have a "could improve" status for surgery and Vanash, to his credit, acknowledged that and also pointed out that colorectal surgery had pretty good outcomes. And he was right. Everything went pretty well exactly as he said. I had a temporary ileostomy, which was reversed recently and I am now fully recovered. There are a couple of reasons why I gave Vanash the 5 star rating. I already mentioned his bedside manner, which was exemplary, caring and attentive. Unfortunately, during my 2 stays in the hospital, I had witnessed some other consultants who were very fond of hearing their own voice. The nursing staff in Flaunden A were absolutely wonderful. I certainly received "great care" and also felt, dare I say it, love. It was a very enriching experience. I also think that he managed to organise a team of specialist nurses, stoma care nurses (Paula Williams-Bowen was looking after me), enhanced recovery nurse Laura Bryant, and colorectal nurse Deborah Sumner) that functions smoothly and communicates clearly both pre and post op. It is a good example of how NHS should be. Together with the ward staff it is a haven of efficiency in the general administrative chaos that seems to permeate the NHS. My experience of adjuvant chemotherapy, which followed my op was an example of that. Vanash cares for his patients and therefore has the right to demand that his co-workers do the same and of course they respond to his example. I felt safe in their care.

Mr Patel has been superb from start to finish. Pre-surgery Mr Patel carefully discussed the operation, the options that I had and the potential risks. He patiently answered all of my questions and concerns and the specifics of my surgery felt very much like a collective decision (included helpful input from the MDT). The surgery date was swiftly arranged and the operation went well and was exactly as Mr Patel had outlined. Mr Patel visited me at least once a day whilst in hospital to check my recovery and the follow-up care; thus ensuring that my pain relief was adequate and I could be discharged asap (which I was keen to do). In summary, Mr Patel is professional, conscientious and caring. I am very grateful to have experienced such a high level of care and skill.

Mr Patel my consultant , I couldn’t ask for a better doctor for 2 operations subtotal Colectomy and year later Proctectomy , he is an outstanding surgeon with the minimal of pain through out my operations , he explains , he has empathy , understanding and explains my procedures in details and plain language for me to understand. Following a routine test, I was diagnosed with colon cancer, in January 2022, by 23rd February I had been operated on by Vanash in Watford, and by Saturday 26th Feb. I was home. From Jan to Feb all went very speedily and very efficiently. All staff, at every stage, including the Colonoscopy Team at Hemel; the Colorectal Nurse Specialists, the Ultrasound Team, the Covid Team at Albans, and all the staff on the ward at Watford, were very good. Judging by my operation and the way I am recovering, I suspect, Mr Patel is an excellent surgeon. His manner, and inter-personal skill worked for me. The explanation at the initial interview was clear, with plenty of time for questions. He offered to speak with my daughter in law, who had a medical background, if she wanted to phone him. The diagram he drew showing what he was going to do was really helpful, it allowed me to follow things later in the supporting literature. All in all, excellent, thank you very much. ( I might write a more detailed review which I will forward to you, if I do.)

Mr Patel is an amazing consultant. He listens, he explains, he gives you choices and you feel cared for. My terrifying experience of being diagnosed with bowel cancer after routine screening was definitely made easier by his kindness and his ability to make me feel my treatment and recovery were in the safest possible hands. Mr Patel was also very supportive to my family and personally rang my daughter after my surgery to let her know how it had gone which assured her of the care I was receiving. All round he made the experience as good as it could possibly be under the circumstances.

This year I was diagnosed with a serious colon issue.I then met doctor Vanash Patel who discussed my condition and told me what he will do to sort my problem out.He was very detailed on what I would have to be done but was always very optimistic and confident that he would be undertaking my surgery to get me back to good health and promised that following the first operation I would need a second although not so much of an emergency but would get me back in as soon as time would allow. From that meeting early this year he was always in touch, got me in for my first operation and recently sorted my second operation out as promised. I was a bit worried as I heard from others as even on the news about backlogs on operations for patients even for years. Whilst in hospital he came to see me nearly every day and put any fears I had behind me. To me doctor Patel is an extremely confident person, will be honest with you and only has his patients healthcare at mind. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him, his team and all the NHS staff at Watford General Hospital for what I could see for my time in there , for their caring approach to all patients especially under the current climate with covid, Thank You,Thank You,Thank You and hope everyone can have a bit of a break this Christmas

I attended Emergency Surgical Unit in Sept 2021. Mr Patel was very calm and attentive to my presenting symptoms. I felt very well looked after, and the initial and additional tests were done efficiently and calmly. I was kept updated about tests results as soon as they were ready. The relevant specialists required to treat me were then promptly consulted and a treatment plan put into action. I feel the care given to me at Watford General Hospital by Mr Vanash Patel and his team was outstanding, and anyone under his care is in the best hands.

Dr Patel met us today to give us the results of lab analysis of samples taken during the colonic cancer surgery that he carried out two weeks ago on my wife. He was careful to explain everything that had happened and what they found in the analysis. A total of 52 lymph nodes were examined and no sign of cancer was found. This meant no chemotherapy but Dr Patel explained the follow-up monitoring procedure that the unit operates as standard. Because of this we were finally able to relax in the knowledge that the correct procedure had been carried out in the correct way. Dr Patel's manner was at all times considerate and he listened carefully to any questions that I or my wife asked - and he answered the questions equally carefully. We are both very pleased with the treatment my wife received and have full confidence in the unit.

What can I say about Vanash Patel and his team that hadn’t already been said. He cares! I was extremely worried when I was given my diagnosis but when my wife and I met him, it didn’t take long to get the reassurance that we both needed. He and the team have a knack of putting things in perspective and the clearer things are for patients, the easier it is to get through the procedures that lay ahead. We were both amazed with the follow up calls from the specialist nurses and how we were made to feel like individuals with our own unique set of concerns. We’ve never felt like just one of many. Mr (Vanesh) Patel is amazing. I have had some terrible news, but he and his team have been open, honest and compassionate in explaining to me the current situation, and the way forward. He has clarified each step, asking me how it was, how I felt, and been responsive to my needs. He has been calm, positive but enquiring as to how I am coping with the situation. He has called within hours of new information being available, to keep me updated. He has arranged an endoscopy and a scan almost immediately. Everyone knows my file, is warm and personal, but professional. Cancer nurses, again knowing my file, have called to follow up. The whole team (Watford General/nursing specialists) is joined up and reassuring in the circumstances. I will not go on the internet to research information, as I have complete trust and confidence in the information I have been given (verbal and specific McMillan booklet). I only wish that all nhs patients (like me) had this level of care. Unfortunately we don’t often hear good news stories. Difficult to suggest how the service could be improved, to be honest, but I will keep mindful of this!

During the summer of 2020 I was admitted to Watford General Hospital for an emergency operation. I was under the excellent care of Mr. Vanish Patel and his team. I am extremely grateful for Mr. Patel’s dedication and care during this difficult time. I consulted with Vanash whilst I was in hospital. Not only was his advice to me comforting his judgement was very sound. In my situation it was different from that which was being suggested by the hospital consultant seeing me and was in my opinion prefect as it saved me from an unnecessary operation.

Mr Vanash patel was and is a great doctor, he was very understanding and took the time to explain everything that needed, he also kept checking up on the obvs and made sure i was getting the care i needed. I am very happy with the way i was treated by him and his team and would most definitely recommend him to anyone in the future, overall he is a great person as well as a great doctor and it was a pleasure to be under his care and i would like to thank him for all he done.

My mother was a patient at Watford General for over three weeks, and was in the Intensive Care Unit following her operation. She is now recovering at home and I am submitting this review on her behalf. These are her words: 'Mr Patel, with his calm and kind professional authority, always seemed to impart to me - no matter how deeply anxious I was at the time - a renewed sense of hope and confidence in the future that was still a possibility. I did, of course, also appreciate enormously the care and attention that I received from all the nursing staff at Watford General.' I too would like to express my deepest gratitude to Mr Patel and to the nurses for the exceptional care that they showed to my mother throughout her time in hospital. As the operation took place during the Covid 19 Lockdown, all communication had to be via telephone rather than in person. Thanks to the exceptional attentiveness, expertise, and sensitivity of Mr Patel and the nurses looking after my mother, I was able to keep very well informed and reassured about her progress. I would like to thank Mr Patel very much indeed for speaking to me at length on the telephone both before and after my mother’s operation. He explained to me very clearly why the operation was necessary, exactly what it would involve, what the benefits and risks of the operation were, and how long my mother might need to stay in hospital to recover following the operation. He answered all my questions most informatively and sensitively. I was immensely appreciative that he phoned me as soon as the operation had been done. I felt that that call showed an exceptional degree of attentiveness and understanding towards family members. My deepest thanks to Mr Patel for taking such good care of my dear mother.

I was under the care of Mr V Patel, as I have had a lot of major operations in the past, all at WGH,I was a little worried, although I had met him in the Outpatients dept once. I was admitted to WGHas an emergency and put under the care of Mr V Patel I was in hospital for four weeks,.i must admit I looked. Forward to every morning when he came to review me,unfortunately he said I should go to St Marks for my op but just as the coved-19 started my op was cancelled but he told me he would make sure I would go to StMarks, true to his word I have an app on 20 May at St Marks, I would defiantly recommend, he is very attentive explains every aspect of what is happening and never in a rush, as I am sure he is,.his whole demeaned is very positive and immediately you can relate and speak and he understands.

Mr Patel performed bowel surgery for cancer just as Watford hospital was hosting Covid19 patients ( in a separate part of the hospital). Mr Patel was so reassuring and calm and explained everything clearly. I had no worries about the surgery- I was much more concerned about the virus. The operation went ahead as planned and I left hospital early as I was well enough to do so. Ten days later he rang me himself to explain the results of the tests. Excellent service at such a busy and stressful time for all in the NHS. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr V Patel as a surgeon, and Watford General for their care

Mr Patel from the beginning explained everything to me in a particularly clear, helpful and patient way. I felt fully informed of the situation and my options. I particularly appreciate the trouble he took to secure my early treatment. After my operation he has continued to be attentive and supportive. My keyhole surgery to remove a tumour on the intestine was amazing. I was expecting a lot more pain and discomfort. 10 days after the op I stopped needing any painkillers, was eating well, sleeping well and walking the dog every day. Mr Patel was very helpful in explaining things before and after the op. The hospital staff (Watford) were all good too. My thanks to all of them.

My son was admitted on Monday morning with suspected appendicitis’s. It became very clear within a couple of hours that he would need surgery. Dr Vanash Patel came to talk us through the procedure. As a parent you are naturally worried when it’s you child and for my son it was scary knowing he had to have an operation. Dr Patel was brilliant he sat down with us and explained exactly what would happen. He was very caring and listened carefully to any questions we had. We felt very reassured. The Op went very well and in the morning he explained clearly what to expect in terms of aftercare etc when we went home. My son is recovering well Thank you so much for your great care. Vanash was friendly and caring. One of the few doctors to take the time to explain everything in a simple way and to answer all of my questions. Before my surgery he explained in detail all of the possible outcomes, good and bad and still managed to put my mind at rest about the surgery. During my re overt period, he would also try to include me in decisions regarding my treatment before giving his recommendations to the nurses or other doctors so that I felt like part of the process. I hope that I never have to have this type of major surgery ever again but if I do, Vanash will be one of the people that I will want in the room.

Dr Patel has a very gentle and considerate manner. He is very informative and gives details as to the plan. Pre surgery Dr Patel was most helpful and able to describe the process ahead. Post surgery he was very attentive and gave good advice for recovery. I would highly recommend Dr Patel.

In the morning before my operation, Mr Patel clearly explained the procedure and associated risks. He appeared to understand my apprehension and put me at ease by answering the questions I had. In particular he allowed me to wait for my wife to arrive before discussing the procedure which I appreciated. In the days which followed my surgery, Mr Patel came to see me even if the on call surgeon had already been. He listened to my concerns and discussed with me the various options regarding progressing my recovery. For example, he supported my request that my epidural not be removed at 9pm at night, as sought by the nursing staff, in order to continue to manage my pain over night and then be removed in the morning.
