Professor Basky Thilaganathan is a highly revered consultant in fetal medicine and obstetrics who, at present, practises at the highly regarded Harley Street London-based Ultrasound Diagnostic Services clinic. He is also currently the lead trainer of the Maternal-Fetal medicine subspeciality training programme at St. George's Hospital in London.
Specialising in maternal-fetal medicine Professor Thilaganathan's main clinical interests include fetal growth restriction due to placental dysfunction, preeclampsia, as well as multiple pregnancy. As well as being editor-in-chief of the medical journal 'Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology', Professor Thilaganathan is so too the personal chair in fetal medicine at the University of London.
Impressively, he is the clinical lead responsible for developing and leading the first non-invasive prenatal testing lab in the UK NHS, established in order to effectively and safely carry out cell-free DNA aneuploidy pregnancy screening. He undertook his undergraduate training at King's College London, where he would, during his training, successfully complete both a BSc in genetic engineering (1985) and an MBBS (1998).
He would then later obtain a PhD from said university in 1996, before being notably awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2017. He has, thus far in his medical career, authored an impressive two undergraduate and six postgraduate textbooks in total, and over 300 peer-reviewed publications in highly established indexed journals.
