PRP injections are an increasingly popular treatment for a wide range of conditions, as explained by renowned consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr Samer Morgan in his latest article. Mr Morgan explains the different conditions PRP injections are used to treat, how safe these injections are and how long it takes to see results.

What conditions can PRP injections effectively address?

PRP injections are not a new treatment, but their popularity is on the rise. I frequently recommend PRP for the management of tendinopathy and plantar fasciopathy, as they have shown great results in the relief of symptoms.

PRP injections are also becoming more popular in the treatment of early joint degeneration. While it won't cure the degeneration, PRP injections significantly improve associated symptoms, making it a preferred choice in these specific areas.

Are PRP injections a safe and effective alternative to surgery?

PRP injections are a safe, secure procedure, especially useful in tendinopathy cases. While it doesn't entirely replace surgery for joint degeneration, it does provide symptom relief and a valuable buffer before opting for more definitive treatments.

What’s involved in the process of getting PRP injections?

PRP injections are a straightforward, day case procedure. A specialised kit facilitates the centrifugation of plasma, producing plasma-rich platelets ready for injection into the targeted area. No extensive setup is required, ensuring a safe and efficient process.

How soon can patients expect to see results?

I typically advise patients to allow two to four weeks for noticeable improvements. While results may take a bit longer in some cases, patience is key.

Are there any potential side effects or risks associated with PRP injections?

None to speak of. PRP injections are inherently safe, being a form of injection. The only theoretical risk may involve infection, but the chances of major side effects are minimal.
