Medical cannabis has gained attention as a potential alternative treatment for managing symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Characterised by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, ADHD can significantly impact daily life, relationships, and productivity.

While traditional treatments like stimulant medications and behavioural therapy are effective for many, they are not suitable for everyone. Medical cannabis offers a novel avenue for symptom management, though it remains a topic of ongoing research and debate.

Cannabis contains compounds called cannabinoids, with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) being the most well-known. These cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating mood, attention, and impulse control. Emerging research suggests that medical cannabis may help reduce symptoms such as restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and emotional dysregulation. For instance, CBD, a non-psychoactive component of cannabis, has shown promise in reducing anxiety and improving focus without the "high" associated with THC.

While anecdotal evidence and some preliminary studies support the use of medical cannabis for ADHD, the lack of large-scale clinical trials makes it challenging to draw definitive conclusions. Critics argue that cannabis use, particularly products high in THC, may exacerbate some ADHD symptoms or lead to dependency. Additionally, concerns exist about the long-term effects of cannabis on cognitive development, especially in children and adolescents.

In regions where medical cannabis is legal, its use for ADHD typically requires careful oversight by a healthcare provider. Patients and caregivers must navigate considerations such as appropriate dosages, delivery methods (e.g., oils, tinctures, or capsules), and potential side effects. It is also essential to weigh the benefits against risks and consider cannabis as part of a broader treatment plan that includes behavioural interventions and lifestyle changes.

As research into the therapeutic potential of cannabis evolves, it may become a viable option for individuals seeking alternative ADHD treatments. However, more studies are needed to establish its safety and efficacy conclusively. In the meantime, open discussions with healthcare professionals can help individuals explore whether medical cannabis might be an appropriate addition to their ADHD management strategy.
