Benign prostate hyperplasia is a common issue for men over 50, which causes urination problems. Although this condition isn’t a type of cancer and doesn’t seriously threaten your health, it can cause embarrassment, discomfort and inconvenience. Mr Rono Mukherjee, a vastly experienced urological surgeon, outlines the best treatment option for this condition.

A man at peace with his prostate

The Covid-19 pandemic has, unfortunately, had a profound effect on the NHS benign urology service, causing longer waits for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) treatment, which can lead to worsening of symptoms. Without treatment, these symptoms can develop into acute urinary retention, leading to long-term bladder function difficulties.

Common BPH Symptoms:

The most common symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia are related to the urination process. They include:

  • needing to urinate more frequently than usual
  • being woken up by the need to urinate during the night (nocturia)
  • urgency
  • hesitancy
  • weak flow
  • inability to urinate

Treatment

If you are experiencing BPH symptoms and feel that the medication you’ve been prescribed isn’t producing the desired relief, I offer complete prostate assessment and treatment advice including TURP.

Since 2015 I have also been offering another treatment option, the UroLift® System. This is a minimally invasive and relatively simple procedure, which provides similar quality of life improvements to TURP treatment. My patients have reported extremely positive, long-lasting outcomes from this treatment.

The UroLift® System

UroLift® treatment has been approved by the National Institute for Healthcare and Excellence (NICE). It unblocks the prostate without the need for cutting, heating, or removing the problematic tissue, allowing patients to quickly return to their normal life. It is a procedure with minimal risk, which can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. The other advantages of this procedure include:

  • 15-20 minute day case procedure
  • rapid symptom relief and recovery
  • low-risk procedure - does not cause new erectile or ejaculatory dysfunction to patients
  • very few patients require post-operative catheterisation
