Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic or functional procedure aimed at improving the appearance or function of the eyelids. This surgery can be performed on the upper, lower, or both eyelids and is designed to remove excess skin, muscle, or fat that can cause drooping, puffiness, or sagging around the eyes.

While many people seek blepharoplasty for cosmetic reasons to achieve a more youthful appearance, the procedure can also help improve vision in cases where drooping eyelids obstruct sight.

Why consider blepharoplasty?

As we age, the skin around the eyes naturally loses elasticity, and fat deposits can accumulate, leading to sagging, puffiness, or the formation of under-eye bags. This can make individuals look tired or older than they feel. In some cases, drooping upper eyelids can become so severe that they impair peripheral vision, creating functional problems in addition to cosmetic concerns. Blepharoplasty can address these issues, offering both aesthetic and practical benefits.

Common reasons to consider blepharoplasty include:

  • Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids.
  • Puffiness or bags under the eyes that contribute to a tired appearance.
  • Loose skin on the upper eyelids affecting vision.
  • Wrinkled or sagging skin on the lower eyelids.

The procedure

Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. For the upper eyelids, the surgeon makes an incision along the natural crease to remove excess skin, muscle, or fat. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is usually made just below the lash line to remove or reposition fat and smooth out the skin.

Recovery from blepharoplasty generally takes one to two weeks, during which patients may experience bruising, swelling, and temporary discomfort. The results of the surgery, once healed, can last for years, giving a more refreshed and youthful appearance.

Risks and considerations

Like any surgery, blepharoplasty carries some risks, including infection, scarring, and dry eyes. It's essential to consult with an experienced surgeon to determine if you're a good candidate and to discuss your specific goals and expectations for the procedure.

Blepharoplasty is a highly effective way to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes and improve vision, helping individuals look more rested and refreshed.
