St George’s hospital is a teaching hospital located in Tooting, South London and forms part of the St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. St George’s hospital provides high-level care in all areas, along with offering specialist care for complex cases such as trauma, neurology, kidney transplantation, cancer care and cardiac care. St George’s hospital is one of four major trauma centre’s that serve London, and one of eight hyper-acute stroke units for the capital. St George’s hospital medical school is renowned for its training of medical staff, and for the medical research carried out.
The hospital was founded in 1733, and originally built in Hyde Park Corner before going through various location changes before settling at its current site in Tooting in 1973 after incorporating St George’s University.
Travelling to St George’s Hospital, London
St George’s Hospital main entrance is located on Blackshaw Road in Tooting, in South London. The post code for St George’s Hospital is SW17 0QT. Other entrances are located on Cranmer Terrace, Effort Street and Cambole Road.
If you are travelling to the hospital via the London Underground, the nearest station is Tooting Broadway, which you can reach on the Northern Line (the black line on the tube map). It takes approximately ten minutes to walk to the hospital from the station.
You can also travel by bus to St George’s Hospital, with bus routes 493 and G1 entering the hospital grounds. Bus routes 44, 77, 270, N44, 57, 131, 219, N155, 155, 264, and 280 all pass near the hospital, depending where you are travelling from.
If you are travelling to the hospital by train, you can travel to Tooting station, which is linked to the hospital via the bus routes previously mentioned.
For those travelling from further afield, the two nearest airports to the hospital are Heathrow airport and Gatwick airport. The hospital is well connected from both of these airports, as well as the other major London airports.
Car parking at St George’s Hospitals
If you are driving to St George’s hospital, you can enter the hospital premises via the A24 on Tooting High Street, or via Fountain Road off the A217.
Car parking is provided within the hospital’s premises, and costs £2.50 per hour up to five hours, with six hours priced at £15, and a daily fixed rate of £25 for parking longer than eight hours.
Payment must be made in cash, although card payments will be accepted at the security desk, in the Grosvenor Wing.

The hospital rating, provided by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), shows that the hospital received good ratings for its staffing levels, such as doctors, nurses and care workers. The NHS Friends and Family Test, a way for users of the hospital to say whether they would recommend the hospital to their friends and family, rates the hospital well, with high recommendations for inpatients, community, and outpatients departments.
