As part of National Allergy Week, Professor Adam Fox joined the Morning Live team to discuss why there has been a significant rise in allergies.

Professor Adam Fox was very pleased to be at St Thomas' Hospital on 17th April 2024 to speak at the annual Allergy Academy Food Allergy Study Day. It's the 17th consecutive year this event has been held, and each year he reviews key publications from the past year in a talk titled talk, titled ‘If you only read 5 papers on food allergy this year…’
This year, he covered three key areas:
1. Prevalence of food allergy
• Data from a review commissioned by the European Academy of Allergy & Clinical Immunology shows no significant increase in the prevalence of 8 common food allergies over the past decade.
• 8 specific allergens were studied: milk, egg, soy, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish.
• Despite a marked increase in severe reactions leading to increased hospital admissions among children, overall food allergy rates do not appear to have materially increased.
2. Advances in Treatments for food allergy:
• Oral immunotherapy remains a primary focus, with emerging alternatives gaining attention.
• Sublingual immunotherapy and epicutaneous immunotherapy show promise in recent studies.
• Biologics offer injectable options to reduce the risk of allergic reactions, potentially guarding against multiple food allergies.
3. Food allergy severity scores
• Struggles arise in determining the severity of food allergies, crucial for treatment allocation within resource restrained healthcare systems.
• Establishing a standardised severity scoring system remains complex due to the diverse nature of allergic reactions.
• Metrics for assessment include reaction severity, required medications, eliciting dose, impact on quality of life, and associated costs.
