Mohs Surgery and Skin Cancer Treatments Mostrare di più
Dr Dev Shah a Consultant Dermatologist and Cutaneous Mohs Surgeon at BMI Bishops Wood Hospital looks at the treatments available for skin cancer with insight into his area of treatment expertise Mohs surgery.
Mohs' micrographic surgery (MMS) is used to treat non-melanoma skin cancers when it is felt there is a high risk of the cancer spreading or returning, or the cancer is in an area where it would be important to remove as little skin as possible, such as the nose or eyes. It involves removing the tumour bit by bit, as well as a small area of skin surrounding it. This minimises the removal of healthy tissue and reduces scarring. Each time a piece of tissue is removed, it is checked for the presence of cancer. The procedure may need to be repeated two or three times to ensure the cancer is completely removed.

What is Skin Cancer and Who is at Risk? Mostrare di più
Dr Dev Shah a Consultant Dermatologist and Cutaneous Mohs Surgeon at BMI Bishops Wood Hospital looks at skin cancer as a condition and examines who is at risk.
Skin cancer is not only a disease that only affects the elderly; in fact more than two 15-34 year olds in the UK each day are diagnosed with malignant melanoma.
In the UK over 100,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed and over 10,000 of these will be malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of the disease. Whilst we are getting better at spotting the signs of skin cancer, there is clearly a long way to go. There are three types of skin cancer: malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Cases of melanoma are rising faster than any other type of deadly cancer.
