Colonoscopy is a cornerstone of colorectal health, essential for diagnosing and preventing serious conditions such as colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Mr Henry Ferguson, a consultant general and colorectal surgeon shares his expertise in minimally invasive techniques and colorectal cancer management for this article.

What is the purpose of a colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy serves multiple purposes, from routine screening to addressing complex gastrointestinal conditions:

  • A colonoscopy can diagnose abnormalities such as polyps or cancer at an early stage, enabling timely intervention.
  • For patients with intestinal bowel diseases like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, colonoscopy is essential for monitoring disease progression and tailoring treatments.
  • Evaluating symptoms such as rectal bleeding or abdominal pain, which often require colonoscopy for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.

What are the benefits of colonoscopy?

As a leader in minimally invasive surgery and colorectal cancer research, Mr Ferguson utilises the latest advancements to enhance patient outcomes:

  • High-resolution imaging, which facilitates detailed visualisation for precise diagnosis.
  • Polypectomy, which is the excision of polyps that are at risk of developing into cancer., fast treatment, screening
  • Personalised sedation options, which ensure maximum comfort during the procedure.

A good surgeon will be able to care for the patient beyond the procedure itself. Patient-centred care emphasises clear communication, patient education, and individualised care to ensure that each patient feels informed and at ease.

What can patients expect during a colonoscopy?

Preparation is crucial for a successful colonoscopy. Patients should be aware that they will need to follow a specific diet before the procedure so that the bowel is clear for examination – it could be a pure liquid diet with no solids. They may be asked to take a solution to purge the bowel entirely. The entire procedure takes around an hour, depending on the purpose of the procedure, and patients will likely be sedated or under an anaesthetic for the duration of it. Patients may feel cramping, tightness, and gas while recovering, but this will only last for a day or two.

Colonoscopy is invaluable in diagnosing, preventing, and managing colorectal conditions. With expertise spanning clinical care, innovative research, and surgical excellence, Mr Henry Ferguson ensures patients receive the highest standard of care tailored to their needs.
