Lip lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the shape, position, and proportions of the upper lip, creating a more youthful and harmonious appearance. Often sought by individuals who feel their upper lip appears too long, thin, or droops with age, this procedure delivers a rejuvenated look while maintaining a natural aesthetic.

Understanding lip lift surgery

The lip lift is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. The most common technique is the "subnasal bullhorn" method, where a small incision is made along the natural crease beneath the nose.

Excess skin is removed, and the upper lip is gently lifted, shortening the distance between the nose and the top lip. This creates a more defined cupid’s bow, increases the visible height of the red part of the lip, and enhances the overall balance of facial features.

Benefits of lip lift surgery

Lip lift surgery provides both aesthetic and functional benefits. For patients who experience lip thinning due to aging, the procedure restores volume and contour, offering a more youthful appearance. It can also improve the definition of the lips, making them appear fuller without the need for injectable fillers. Additionally, the results are permanent, eliminating the need for repeated treatments.

Ideal candidates

This surgery is suitable for individuals who have a long philtrum (the area between the nose and the upper lip) or thin upper lips and desire a subtle enhancement. It’s also ideal for those looking for a permanent solution compared to temporary options like fillers. Candidates should be in good general health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcomes.

Recovery and aftercare

Post-surgery, patients may experience mild swelling and bruising, which typically subside within a week. The incision site heals well and is discreetly hidden along the base of the nose.

Following the surgeon’s aftercare instructions, including avoiding strenuous activities and keeping the area clean, ensures optimal healing and results. Lip lift surgery is a safe, effective way to enhance facial harmony and achieve a youthful, confident smile. Consultation with a qualified facial plastic surgeon is essential to determine if the procedure aligns with your goals.
