Below, we tell you all you need to know with regards to periodontal treatment and periodontal disease, as esteemed periodontist, Dr Georgina Rafel Vernet, explains all.

What is periodontal treatment, and what does it help to prevent?

Periodontal treatment, also known as gum disease treatment, is a crucial aspect of oral healthcare aimed at preventing and managing gum disease, a common yet serious condition affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.

What are the causes of periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease occurs when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up on the teeth and along the gum line, leading to inflammation and infection of the gums.

What could happen if gum disease is left untreated?

If left untreated, gum disease can progress from mild gingivitis to more severe forms, such as periodontitis, which can cause irreversible damage to the gums and bone supporting the teeth, leading to tooth loss.

How is periodontal treatment carried out?

Periodontal treatment aims to halt the progression of gum disease, restore gum health, and prevent further damage to the teeth and surrounding tissues. The treatment approach may vary depending on the severity of the gum disease and individual patient factors.

For mild cases of gum disease, treatment typically involves professional dental cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, to remove plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth and root surfaces. This deep cleaning procedure helps to eliminate bacteria and toxins from below the gum line, allowing the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth.

In more advanced cases of gum disease, additional treatments may be necessary to address deep pockets or pockets of infection in the gums. These treatments may include antibiotics, antimicrobial mouth rinses, or surgical interventions such as flap surgery or gum grafting to repair damaged gum tissue and promote healing.

What can I do at home to reduce my chances of getting gum disease?

In addition to professional treatment, maintaining good oral hygiene practices at home is essential for managing gum disease and preventing its recurrence. This includes brushing and flossing regularly, using antimicrobial mouth rinses, and attending regular dental check-ups and cleanings.
