Breast lipomodelling is a cosmetic and reconstructive procedure that has grown in popularity over the years. This procedure can be performed alongisde breast implantation. Consultant oncoplastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic breast surgeon Miss Salma Naseem explores the essentials of breast lipomodelling to help you make an informed decision.

What is breast lipomodelling?

Breast lipomodelling, also known as fat transfer or autologous fat grafting, involves taking fat from one part of your body and using it to reshape or augment the breasts. The fat is typically harvested from areas like the thighs, abdomen, or flanks (commonly called "love handles") through liposuction. Once collected, the fat is purified and carefully injected into the breast area to achieve the desired volume and contour.

This procedure is popular for its dual benefits: it enhances breast appearance while simultaneously contouring the donor areas of the body.

Who is a good candidate for breast lipomodelling?

Breast lipomodelling is suitable for individuals looking for subtle breast enhancements or reconstruction following surgery, such as after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. It is also an option for correcting breast asymmetry (uneven size or shape) or for improving the results of previous breast surgeries.

However, it may not be ideal for those seeking a significant increase in breast size, as the results are more modest compared to breast implants. Additionally, patients should have adequate fat stores in other areas of their body to provide sufficient material for the transfer.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure involves two key steps: liposuction and fat grafting. Under anaesthesia, a surgeon uses a small cannula (a thin tube) to gently remove fat from a predetermined area. This fat is then processed to separate healthy fat cells from impurities. Using a fine needle or cannula, the purified fat is injected into the breast tissue in layers to ensure a smooth, natural appearance.

The entire process typically takes a few hours, and most patients can return home the same day. The results of lipomodelling are visible immediately, though final outcomes become more apparent after swelling subsides.

Are there risks or limitations?

Like any surgical procedure, breast lipomodelling carries some risks. These may include infection, fat necrosis (when some of the transferred fat does not survive), or uneven results. Additionally, a portion of the transferred fat may be reabsorbed by the body over time, potentially requiring a follow-up procedure to maintain the desired results.

It is essential to discuss your expectations and medical history with a qualified surgeon to minimise risks and ensure a successful outcome.

What are the benefits of breast lipomodelling?

This technique offers a range of advantages. The most notable is its natural look and feel, as the procedure uses your body’s own fat rather than synthetic implants. Additionally, the scars from both liposuction and fat grafting are small and often fade significantly over time. Many patients appreciate the added benefit of improved body contouring in areas where fat is removed.

Breast lipomodelling is a versatile and minimally invasive option for enhancing your breasts, offering both cosmetic and reconstructive benefits tailored to your needs.
