Cfast cosmetic braces: what to expect after they are fitted

Cfast cosmetic braces is a simple minimally-invasive cosmetic treatment that focuses on straightening your front teeth in as little as six months or less. Here, we talk to one of London’s leading cosmetic dentists Dr Biju Krishnan about whether it’s a painful procedure and what you can expect afterwards, from brushing your teeth to wearing a retainer at night.

Is Cfast a painful procedure?

As with any orthodontic procedure, there may be some discomfort for a few days after the braces have been fitted. With Cfast, however, the forces are very light and usually after the first seven to ten days, there should be little to no pain at all.

During the fitting, the teeth might become a little mobile and sensitive to pressure, which is quite normal and will fully resolve when the braces are removed.

Are there any complications?

Not everyone is suitable for treatment. Cases are only selected where we can achieve a significant improvement to the front teeth in a reasonable time frame. If there are underlying health conditions or problems with some of your existing teeth, the treatment either cannot be performed or needs to be modified. This will be discussed between you and your dentist.

Once Cfast has been fitted, am I restricted in what I can eat?

If you have opted for a fixed brace, it is advised to avoid hard foods such as nuts, popcorn, crusty bread or any foods that may accidentally dislodge the brackets. I recommend that you stay away from heavily-coloured foods, which may occasionally stain the brace. If this does happen, however, your dentist will be able to easily restore the cosmetic appearance.

If you have opted for removable aligners, it is best that these are removed before eating or drinking.

Will I have trouble cleaning my teeth?

It might be a little more challenging to clean your teeth if you are wearing a brace. Good oral hygiene is very important during treatment and your dentist or dental hygienist will show you how to look after your teeth and they will suggest the right products to use.

Will I need to wear retainers?

The Cfast protocol provides two types of retainers; a fixed retainer that is permanently bonded to the inside of the teeth and a removable retainer, which is worn overnight.

The latter, which is worn every night is the main retainer. It is advised that during the first year, you wear the retainer every night whilst sleeping only and three to four nights per week thereafter.

As long as you wear the retainer your teeth will not move. The fixed retainer is a very thin metal strip, which is invisible and very comfortable. This is the back-up retainer and is there to ensure that there is no significant tooth movement should the removable retainer become damaged or lost. They can last for up to two years and may then require repair or replacement.
