The dental implant process is a transformative solution for replacing missing teeth, offering a permanent and natural-looking restoration. It involves several stages, from initial consultation to final restoration, each designed to ensure a successful outcome. We spoke to esteemed implant surgeon/general oral surgeon, Dr Ionel Nistor about what to expect.

Initial consultation

The process begins with a detailed consultation with your dentist or oral surgeon. During this appointment, your oral health is assessed through X-rays and 3D imaging to determine if your jawbone is healthy enough to support an implant. The dentist will also review your medical history and discuss your goals and expectations, offering a tailored treatment plan.

Pre-implant preparation

If your jawbone lacks the necessary density, a bone graft may be recommended to create a stable foundation. Healing from a bone graft can take several months, but it’s crucial for long-term implant success. For patients with gum disease, periodontal treatment may also be required before moving forward.

Implant placement surgery

Once you are cleared for surgery, the implant placement is scheduled. During this minor surgical procedure, a titanium post, which serves as the tooth root, is inserted into the jawbone.

Local anesthesia or sedation is used to ensure comfort. Over the next few months, the process of osseointegration takes place, where the implant fuses with the bone, creating a stable anchor for the artificial tooth.

Healing and abutment placement

After the osseointegration phase, which typically takes 3-6 months, an abutment is attached to the implant post. This small connector holds the future crown in place. In some cases, a temporary crown may be placed to maintain aesthetics while the gums heal.

Final restoration

The last step involves placing the permanent crown. This custom-made prosthetic is designed to match the colour, size, and shape of your natural teeth, providing a seamless appearance. Your dentist will ensure a perfect fit, restoring full functionality to your bite.

The entire dental implant process can take several months, but it delivers a long-lasting and highly aesthetic solution for tooth loss, improving both appearance and oral health.
