Mr Santdeep Paun is a leading ENT (otolaryngology) surgeon who specialises in nasal and facial plastic surgery. He is based in a selection of well-known clinics across central London, including his clinic on Harley Street and at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. We spoke to Mr Santdeep Paun about why he chose to become a doctor and to become a specialist in ENT surgery.

Why did you choose to become a doctor?

It’s been so long it is difficult to recall all the reasons! Unlike many, I had no-one in the immediate family who were doctors to guide or advise me and indeed my parents were worried it was going to be a tough profession (they were right!). I was always intrigued by medicine - especially surgery - and always felt that’s what I would love to do. It is clearly important to enjoy your work and I think I am lucky and privileged to wake (most!) mornings looking forward to the day ahead.

How long have you been a facial plastic surgeon?

Longer than I care to remember! I trained in otolaryngology first and then specialised in facial plastic surgery thereafter - altogether I have been practising as a consultant for 16 years and did 6 years of specialist training before this.

Why did you decide to specialise in facial plastic surgery?

I was enthused by training with some of the best surgeons in the world (most now retired) in facial plastic surgery, who directly influenced my career pathway. I went on to become one of the first board-certified surgeons in Europe in facial plastic surgery.

What are the principal procedures you perform?

I have become super specialised in the fields of nasal and facial plastic surgery including rhinoplasty, otoplasty and functional nasal and sinus surgeries. I also deal with a lot of snoring issues.

How many rhinoplasties have you performed over the years?

Too many to count! On average I perform about 4 per week between my NHS and private commitments.

What is the thing you most enjoy about being a surgeon?

I love looking after my patients and the ability to change things for the better. There is something very special in being able to do this, whether it be for functional or cosmetic reasons.

What is the most common question you hear from your patients? What would you advise them?

"Do you think I should be having the surgery?” – This is always a difficult thing to answer from my point of view. If it is for functional problems such as breathing issues, it really depends on how bad their symptoms are. Two different patients may have exactly the same problem but may not suffer in the same way. Equally for cosmetic procedures, clearly these are very important personal decisions that should come from the patient themselves and not be influenced in any way by their surgeon. I am there to educate and advise but we very much make sure patients take their time to consider all the options and come to an educated decision.
