What does a dental hygiene treatment involve?

A dental hygiene treatment involves removal of plaque, tartar and stains. Also, the teeth are polished to make them sparkling clean. At the visit the hygienist will show you how to floss between your teeth without damaging your gums, as well as how to brush your teeth effectively with a manual or electric toothbrush.

How often should you get your teeth professionally cleaned?

It is recommended that you see the hygienist for a professional clean every 3 months. Hygienists are professional and can identify any dental problem at the visit and refer you to see the dentist.

Why is having your teeth cleaned regularly important?

Cleaning your teeth regularly will prevent accumulation of plaque and calculus which can cause bad breath and gum disease. Gum disease can lead to the loss of teeth as they will fall out eventually. Loss of teeth can affect how you eat as well as your overall wellbeing.

Can teeth cleaning remove stains and whiten teeth?

Teeth cleaning by a hygienist can remove stains, but cannot whiten the teeth. To whiten the teeth, you will need to use a tray and a whitening gel prescribed by the dentist. The dentist will examine your teeth first and then make you a whitening tray. The dentist will show you how to use the gel so that you do not damage your teeth or gums. What is the best way to prevent tartar and plaque build-up? The best way to prevent tartar and plaque build-up is to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss between the teeth, use mouth wash, and to see the hygienist every 3 months.
