The process of conducting a breast examination should begin with a visual assessment of your breasts. Pay meticulous attention to any alterations in symmetry, any variations in breast shape, deviations in the appearance of the nipples, such as nipple inversion, and the presence of any swelling in the chest wall area beneath the collarbone and beneath the armpit.
Following this initial visual examination, proceed to the tactile phase, using the flat surface of your hands to carefully explore and evaluate the texture of the breast tissue. This examination is ideally performed on a monthly basis, and it is advisable to schedule it on the same day each month, preferably commencing after the conclusion of your menstrual cycle, typically on the first or second day. When conducting the palpation, you can choose to start either in a counterclockwise or clockwise direction, commencing at the one o'clock position and systematically exploring the breast tissue's texture in relation to your chest bone. Be thorough in covering all quadrants and diligently assessing all areas of the breast.
Moreover, it is essential to delve behind the nipple, gently applying pressure to it to check for any discharge. Repeat this procedure on the opposite breast. Utilise your right hand for examining the left breast and your left hand for assessing the right breast.
To conclude the examination, direct your attention to the underarm areas, using the hand opposite to the breast being examined to palpate against the chest wall. Look for any suspicious lumps, and systematically explore the tissue's texture in a manner consistent with the earlier steps. This process should be replicated for the other underarm region, ensuring comprehensive evaluation.
