Thanks to advancements in surgical technology and techniques, patients undergoing cataract surgery can now reap the benefits of micro incision procedures, both in the immediate recovery period and in terms of long term results. We invited highly respected consultant ophthalmologist and cataract and glaucoma specialist Mr Vik Sharma to reveal how micro incision cataract surgery differs from traditional approaches and what to expect from the recovery period to follow.

What is micro incision cataract surgery? How does it differ from traditional cataract surgery?

With new developments in ophthalmology, we have made the incision site even smaller which means safer surgery and quicker healing. Traditionally, we would create a larger wound which may also need stitches but this is very uncommon nowadays.

What are the advantages of micro incision cataract surgery over other surgical techniques?

There are a number of advantages to micro incision cataract surgery over other surgical techniques, including:

  • quicker healing process
  • more stable vision
  • improved vision quality

How big is the incision made during micro incision cataract surgery?

Using the modern micro incisional approach, the size of the incision is now usually around 2mm. Previously, using more traditional techniques, incisions started at 12mm. Thanks to better technology and advanced techniques, we have been able to drastically reduce the incision size.

Is micro incision surgery suitable for all patients requiring cataract surgery?

For most patients, micro incision surgery is a suitable option. In some cases, it may not be a suitable approach if the patient has such an advanced and hard cataract that it has to be taken out of the eye as a whole. This is rare, and in the last decade, I have only had to do that on 2 occasions.

What can patients expect in terms of visual recovery and overall outcomes?

Following micro incision cataract surgery, the eye may feel scratchy for a day or so, but should be comfortable thereafter. Vision improves in the days after surgery and most have clear vision within a week or two.
