Towards an understanding of taste disturbance for patients and professionals. 20 Nov 2024. подробнее
Mags Robinson is joined by Consultant ENT Surgeon Prof Carl Philpott; Registered Dietitians Sheri Taylor and Deborah Howland; and Expert Patient Jo Olliver.
Prof Philpott runs the Smell and Taste Clinic at James Paget University Hospital in Great Yarmouth and is Professor of Rhinology and Olfactology at the University of East Anglia, where he leads a number of research projects related to smell and taste disorders. He is a Fifth Sense Trustee and our Director of Research and Medical Affairs.
Sheri is Director of Specialist Nutrition Rehab which she set up in 2016 to help people after major trauma, including traumatic brain injury, to maximise their health through nutrition.
Deborah is a specialist dietitian in the Dept. of Nutrition and Dietetics at Torbay Hospital in Torquay where she runs a Taste Clinic. Most of her patients are living with the symptoms and side-effects of cancer and cancer treatments.
Jo, who has been living with taste disturbance for two years, shares her personal story, including the medical care she has received; her symptoms and their impact on her quality of life; and her tips for others who are experiencing similar symptoms.
Prof Philpott explains the anatomy of taste and how smell and taste work together to create flavour; some of the common causes of true taste disturbance; how patients who present to his clinic with taste disturbance are diagnosed and managed; and some potential areas for research.
Sheri and Deborah draw on the expertise they have gained from working to help those they support. Together they talk about the importance of good nutrition and hydration; the challenges, and the specific risks to health their patients face; and share some specific interventions and practical suggestions to help improve the quality of life for those affected.
