Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Justine Hextall shares her 3 top tips for glowing skin.
From social media anxiety to the risk of cancer, it's not secret that overusing your phone can lead to a long list of health problems. But according to a leading skin expert, too much screen time could also be wreaking havoc on your complexion - specifically on the neck area.Dermatologist Dr. Justine Hextall has urged women to avoid unsightly 'necklace lines' - deep wrinkles that form underneath the chin - by taking proper care of their skin and spending less time on their mobiles.Speaking on behalf of The Harley Medical Group, Dr. Justine explained: 'When you're constantly looking down at your phone or tablet, you're causing so called necklace lines - horizontal wrinkles on your neck and décolletage.'The neck and décolletage are highly visible parts of our body, and one of the most biggest indicators of aging skin.'She added: Most of us take special care of the skin on the face but often forget the neck and below. The skin structure of the neck and décolletage is much thinner and more fragile than the face and therefore can be prone to sagging.'Along with UV exposure, smoking, excessive alcohol and city living, Dr. Justine cites mobile phones as one of the biggest lifestyle factors ruining our skin - but insists a few simple changes can help combat the problem. She explained: 'Simple changes in your everyday routine can help combat the problem. Treat your neck as you do your face and start with cleansing.'I recommend a gentle wash, preferably mildly acidic, matching the skin's natural pH. When skin is rinsed it should feel calm and hydrated not tight.'Dr. Justine recommends daily sun protection, along with physical blocks such as zinc oxide, which can help reflect light away from skin when applied from your hairline down to your neck.Sagging skin can also be tackled through radiofrequency, micro-needling and ultrasound treatments such as Ultherapy, all of which can help to boost collagen production. But Dr. Justine warns against using creams that promise to tighten the area, adding: 'I am not aware of any cream that can truly firm skin after a few applications with lasting results.'That said, serums and creams with anti-oxidants can protect skin and mitigate against the free radical damage from the effects of pollution and sun exposure, which both work to damage collagen exacerbating the sagging problem.'So in effect, creams can protect against damage to the skin's collagen and elastin over time, if used regularly.' Q&A with Justine Hextall, Dermatologist
Consultant Dermatologist Dr. Justine Hextall explains the symptoms of sensitive skin and the regime of La Roche-Posay products she recommends to patients with sensitive skin. Shop the La Roche-Posay Toleriane range for sensitive skin: https://www.laroche-posay.co.uk/face/range/toleriane-1 What are the symptoms of sensitive skin? There are various symptoms of sensitive skin there’s no absolute golden rule but on the whole it usually means that people find their skin feels irritated, dry from time to time, doesn’t response well to changes in atmosphere, so hot weather, or very cold weather, cold wind, going into a swimming pool – all of those things will irritate sensitive skin. Just be aware of your skin – it’s a question I’m often asked when I’m discussing things with patients – do you become aware of your skin during the day, does it feel slightly dry or irritated? Are you reaching for moisturiser at lunchtime? All of these things suggest that the skin barrier function isn’t optimal and maybe you do have more sensitive skin. What should I look for in my skincare if I have sensitive skin? If you’re trying to manage sensitive skin at home I think it’s very important that the first step is all about the cleanser for me if you’re constantly stripping the skin barrier using heavy soaps or shower gel on your face you’re going to damage even a non-sensitive skin barrier so using a very gentle cleanser that’s preferably going to put some nutrients and some hydration back into the skin is incredibly important. And after that using a suitable moisturiser which isn’t full of perfume, that is going to be very gentle and hydrating and really calm and hydrate the skin barrier. So with sensitive skin it’s all about protecting and building up the skin barrier so it can have a better function, that way the skin is less irritated and also will lose water less and do its job. Also anti-inflammatory products like niacinamide are great because they calm down irritated skin but they also promote ceramides in the skin which is the fat layer which really help to stop water-loss. Why do you recommend La Roche-Posay? I recommend La Roche-Posay to my patients - a gentle cleanser, a really effective moisturiser and suddenly they go from having constantly irritated, red, slightly dry skin to having skin that feels robust and starts to gets a glow.
