Dr Mathew operated on me twice in 2023, the first time on my thumb and the second on my wrist. I cannot thank him and his fantastic team enough for the care that I received throughout this process. He was caring, considerate and communicated with me clearly each time I met with him. He’s an exceptional Dr and I’m enormously grateful for everything he did for me

Mr Philip Mathew is, without doubt, the most polite, caring, pleasant, unassuming, no delusion of grandeur, amazing Consultant! I had the great honour of being one of his patients back at the beginning of December 2021. I had fallen and was seen in Urgent Care at weekend at Chelsea and Westminster hospital and referred to Mr Mathew after weekend. Words cannot explain how both his Registrar Rupert and Mr Mathews came to my aid at a very traumatic time. I was told I had a complex compound fracture of my left wrist. To my amazement I was taken in for surgery at well past 6pm. The operation I am told took over an hour and the next thing I knew I was being admitted for the night in cast and various padded arm slings. From then on I have been under the Mathew’s care and have had regular appointments in his very busy clinic. The care I have received from Mrathew and his team has definitely enabled me to carry on my voluntary work, as I am a War Widow. Today, I was discharged from Mr Mathew’s clinic 101% mended. Mr Mathew arranged for numerous Hand Therapy sessions with his Physios who were all ‘Angels’ and gave me confidence to battle on. If you are ever in the position of having an injury and you are put under the care of Mr Mathew, then I can honestly tell you, he is an amazing surgeon who deserves to be knighted for his services to the NHS. So, Mr Mathew I just want to thank you for never giving up on me when I was low, for being a very quiet, but also personable Consultant, whom put me at ease and explained everything you needed to do and why. I do hope I am never in the situation of any more breaks but feel I should get a tattoo on wrist saying, ‘in event of further bone injury please transfer me to Chelsea and Westminster hospital under care of Mr Philip Mathew!!!!!

Mr. Mathew has performed trigger release surgery on 5 of my fingers. The fingers became painful at different times so I've had 5 operations. Before each operation the pain was excruciating all the time (even when the finger wasn't moving) and Tramadol didn't touch it - this was to the extent that I lost the use of the hand. After each operation, I got the use of the hand fully back and have been completely free of pain. The hand movement is excellent and I would hugely recommend Mr. Mathew who is a genuinely friendly, caring and nice person as well as being an awesome surgeon.

I had a third operation on my previously broken wrist/torn TFCC carried out by Mr Mathew. He carefully considered and discussed with me the technique to be used, as there were several different options. He was very metriculous in pre and post operative investigations to make sure the procedure was carried out absolutely right. Others had advised me against a third operation as it might cause more pain, more stiffness and decrease range of movement. However following surgery pain considerably decreased, stiffness did not increase and range of movement was not affected. I now have a stable wrist and noticeably less pain. I can lift up my daughter and load a car with camping gear, things that I thought I would not be able to do. I can also play the piano pain free. This has significantly increased quality of life. I consider myself very fortunate to have had Mr Mathew as my surgeon.

I had the great fortune to be operated on by Mr Mathew last week, just days before he left Queens Hospital for the Chelsea and Westminster. At our first consultation, he treated my husband and I with such consideration and kindness and gave us a totally detailed, frank and comprehensive appraisal of my injuries- I had broken both wrists as a result of a fall whilst playing tennis- and we were given options as to the way forward. I opted for surgery to realign the bones and saw Mr Mathew both before and after my operation- he reassured me that all had gone well - it was now 9pm in the evening and he had been in theatre with me for more than five hours. Unfortunately I will not see him again now, for my aftercare, but he has left a plan for my recovery and I had my first physio session yesterday. Every member of staff that we have encountered, in all associated departments, were highly complimentary about Mr Mathew ‘s outstanding skills. I cannot thank him enough for reconstructing my wrists - and look forward to being yet another of his success stories. He is a wonderful ambassador for his profession and the NHS.

His secretary leaves a lot to be desired. Initially sent a clinic letter that needs a password, then sent a wrong password, finally got it opened in the end. Needed the latest clinic letter and now two emails a couple weeks apart later no replies at all. Trying to call her too. Does not answer the phone. Is she on a long holiday or something? Such poor service is not what I expect privately.

Mr Mathew is absolutely excellent, in terms of both skill and his approach. He is thorough, compassionate, patient, understanding and goes above and beyond. I broke my hand in December and needed to have an operation. Mr Mathew did all he could to ensure I was treated with urgency and that I had the very best care and treatment. My case was not completely straight forward, due to some other medical issues, but he listened to me and explained my options carefully and clearly, continually doing as much to help and advise me as he possibly could. He is a very neat surgeon and I have only minimal scarring. His aftercare was terrific and he ensured a planned and correct level of aftercare support was there for me. I trust Mr Mathew and in general, he is one of the very best Consultants I have ever been lucky enough to have treat me. I am so thankful to Mr Mathew, for helping me at a time I grately needed it. He listened to me and cared about my situation, as an individual case and as an individual person sat in front of him. Everything he did for me was utterly superb. Mr Mathew is an amazing Consultant and I could not have asked for anyone better. He 100% gives great care.

Mr. Mathew took great care to explain all the options open to me for the relief of the pain from arthritis in my left thumb and wrist. The surgery was very successful and the scars on my hand are virtually invisible. The pain from the arthritis has gone. I am still only seven weeks from the operation and working with the physiotherapist to return to full movement. Mr Mathew has warned me to be careful for another six weeks (before performing a full golf swing!), he has a charming manner and is very easy to talk to. I would highly recommend him to anyone with hand and wrist problems.

I have had my fair share of bad experiences with doctors but I am very happy to say that Mr. Philip Mathew stands miles apart from the rest. He has given me a spark of hope that not all Health Professionals are as bad as I have always experienced. In the spring of 2018, I had injured my finger and it had healed perfectly, so I thought nothing of it. However, my finger continued to be painful although it had healed with a perfect scar. I therefore went to King George Hospital A&E. There, foreign bodies were identified within my finger. Specifically, fragments of glass healed inside my finger with micro fragments within the joint, in addition to a couple of shards of glass through my tendon. My finger also drooped and behaved like mallet finger. I was told I would have to have surgery and that maybe my finger would never be straight again. As you might imagine I was terrified, not only because I had to have a surgery (as I had previous bad experiences) but also because I play music and the little fingers play a very important role. Thereafter, I was referred to Queens Hospital for the surgery. At this point I was further horrified - as they have had a lot of bad publicity in general but also for surgery. I had no choice of course of whom to be referred to, so when the day came, I turned up for my first appointment. Understandably I was very anxious. Whilst there I asked the other patients if they were seeing Mr Philip Mathew. Some of course said yes so I politely asked for more information. To my surprise, everyone was happy to share their stories and further still, highly recommend Mr. Mathew. I started feeling a little more at ease but of course, I had not yet seen him. When I finally met Mr Philip Mathew I saw for myself that what I was told by the other patients was true. He was kind, polite and he listened, he treated me as a human being and not just another number, as most health professionals do - and this is a common belief among patients. He explained the pros and cons of having the surgery and I could see that not only did he know what he was talking about but that he has a passion for what he does. He was calm, positive and this further reassured me that I was in good hands, so the surgery went ahead as planned. I would like to say a HUGE "Thank You!" for a perfectly done surgery. I know that it was only my little finger but to me it is very important for it to be perfectly functional as I play music. Many of your patients say that you are a great surgeon but I say that you are not only a great surgeon but also a great human being. You do not only operate for the sake of operating - you care about your patients and you take pride in your work. These are indeed very rare qualities in doctors and surgeons alike. I would also like to say HUGE "Thank You!" to your surgical team. As the saying goes, a team is only as good as the person who leads them. I am very grateful and count myself very lucky that my surgeon was Mr Philip Mathew. He is an excellent surgeon. Wishing you all the very best, CM Georgiou

I was diagnosed with arthritis at the base of my thumb two years ago and the pain became increasingly worse. I was given an injection to help control the pain which even though was the most painful thing I had ever experinced it did help for about six months. I was recommeded to see Mr Philip Mathew and from the first consultation he explained all the options availabile to me including a procedure called Trapeziectomy with Tightrope. He did not push surgery on me and paitently allowed me to discuss all my concerns with care and understanding, as at that point i was still very unsure. However after the pain became so severve that i was unable to perform even every day tasks I decided to go ahead with the surgery. I am now 7 weeks post op and the pain has completely disappeared. My thumb is still stiff but with the help of a very skilled hand therapist i am gaining more and more movement. I am aware that my full recovery depends on my ability to maintain my physio, however right now we are all very happy with my progress. I would like to highly recommed Mr Philip Mathew as he showed me compasion and understanding and ultimately I am now pain free and can go about my life. Thank you Mr Mathew Kindest Regrards Voulla Georgiou

Mr Mathew did a successful operation for trigger finger release. I was in great pain before, and it was affecting my everyday life. It was the most stressful and difficult time of my life - for me and my family. Phillip took the time to reassure me and my family through this, for which we are very grateful. He is very caring and understands the need of the pacient. He takes a great deal of time to go over everything and is very thorough. Mr Philip Mathew treated me for carpal tunnel and performed the release surgery. He was very friendly, approachable and attentive. During consultations Mr Mathew regularly asks if at that stage of the consultation there were any questions and drew simple illustrations to help explain procedures. Mr Mathew was very helpful when booking in for ultrasound and physio and although this might have delayed his other patients it was reassuring to know that on some occasions when he was running behind for my appointments that this was most likely due to the high level of care he provides to all patients.

After seeing several practitioners, I was recommended to visit Mr. Mathews for treatment for a carpal tunnel release procedure. The treatment and care I received from Mr Mathews was truly exceptional. Firstly, I'd like to say he is friendly, caring and above all approachable. In addition to this, he is clearly highly skilled in his field. But what I really liked was the way he took so much time and trouble to explain very clearly every aspect of the treatment he was giving me. I sincerely recommend Mr Mathews without any hesitation as he is quite simply an extremely nice guy who truly demonstrates outstanding expertise in his field of medicine.

After seeing a range of doctors and consultants, each one finding no problem, I was finally referred to Mr Mathew. From the very first appointment he was fantastic. He listened to me as an individual and at no point did I feel I was a statistic. My appointments were never rushed. The knowledge and ability Mr Mathew has is outstanding. He outlined within the first appointment the problems I was having and immediately offered a solution. The diagnosis was Ulner Styloid Impaction Syndrome and Pisotriquetral Osteoarthritis. I needed 2 operations to solve my wrist problems. I had my first Operation in December 2015, where he performed Ulner Shortening surgery. My 2nd operation was in July 2017. This was to remove the pisiform bone. Both operations were a complete success. At every stage Mr Mathew made sure I understood fully what the procedures entailed. Through different appointments and departments, Mr Mathew colleagues always spoke so highly of him and I had full confidence and the utmost trust in Mr Mathew. I cannot thank Mr Mathew enough for all his help, time and dedication to my personal wrist issues.

I was fortunate to be able to see Mr Mathew very quickly after suddenly experiencing the most severe pain (in my left wrist) ever in my 77 years! I have a number of related problems in other joints, and from a doctor's viewpoint a difficulty in prescribing pain relief. This young man listened intently, and forthwith instituted a diagnostic plan which he explained carefully in layman's terms. Although I suffered an apparently rare but significant reaction to one of the procedures,(an Ultrasound Scan with guided injection) I am satisfied that it could not have been foreseen and when I saw Mr Mathew for the review, he explained precisely the relevant problems, all three possible options, their merits/ limitations, and a regime for day-to-day care. Importantly, because of the complexity, he would write a detailed letter to me and one to my GP which would (a) suggest referral to a dermatologist for a skin test, in order to identify whether I am allergic to one of the drugs used in the procedure preceding the reaction, and(b) to explore the reason for one abnormal blood test reading. On a wider level his diagnostic plan was thorough enough for him to be able to reassure me that there was no general metabolic problem with bones or joints; it's a case of wear and tear. As a retired police officer I well understand! I could not have experienced better and more comprehensive care. He told me that his tutor was Mr Ali, another great consultant (specializing in knee care) who is also at Spire Hartswood and Queens Hospitals and I firmly and fully recommend them both.

I was referred to Dr Mathew for arthroscopic surgery from a neighbouring hospital for a wrist complaint. I was seen by one of his team who wasn't satisfied with this diagnosis so I was sent for further tests. Once my complaint was clarified I was able to have a less invasive treatment today that was uncomfortable to say the least but Dr Mathew who was treating me was the most caring, gentle and informative Doctor that I have had the pleasure to meet. He is skilled and dedicated to his patients, we ran into a few problems during the treatment due to my arthritis but he wouldn't give up as long as I confirmed that I could continue with the situation. He seems so young but so impressive with his knowledge and his patient care, I could have been operated on with negative results and scar tissue if it wasn't for Dr Mathew. I have met quite a few consultants due to bone/arthritis ailments but I was very impressed and thankful today for meeting Dr Mathew.

Having been under the care of Mr Mathew for almost 2 years I can honestly say that his care towards his patients is always the priority, and he will always find the time to listen to the patient and their needs. Discussion for surgery is always conducted in a open professional manner, but in an honest and positive way, plus also he will respect your opinion at the same time. I have had various discussions on surgery alternatives, and will always ask Mr Mathews honest opinion, which I will always get. He is very informative, and will advise you of the options and risks (if any) that are available. Having just had surgery again, which was quite lengthy in time, I knew whatever the outcome Mr Mathew would do whatever was needed to relieve the pain I have been going through. For this round of surgery I just had to trust Mr Mathew, and whatever decisions he made in theatre. Post surgery I was advised of the procedure which he had done. Yet again he went above the duty of care and was still in the hospital advising me of my surgery at 10.30pm !. I can honestly recommend Mr Mathew as a consultant, he has a driving force in orthopeadics, and is constantly searching for new ideas to help people. Our son broke his wrist very badly and we were most fortunate to have Philip Matthew attend to him. From the start, he was attentive, approachable, considerate and put a frightened 14 year old and his worried parents totally at ease. The treatment lasted seven months and involved three operations, two of which were performed by Philip himself. After each operation, he made a point of coming to speak to us, explained in detail what had been done and set out what the prognosis was. His attentiveness was exemplary and his kindness in visiting our son when the boy was upset beyond the normal call of duty. His humanity shone through at all times. His surgical skills are obviously of the highest quality and, allied to his personality, go to make Philip Matthew one of the best consultants we have ever encountered. Our son has now made a full recovery, thanks to the dedication of this excellent surgeon and he has been inspired by him to follow a career as an orthopedic surgeon. As a family, we will always be grateful to Philip and trust we will see him one day as a Professor. We hope that our paths will cross again, possibly with our son shadowing Philip which would be a great honour for us. We wish him all the best for the future and will never forget his kindness and understanding during a very difficult time.

After breaking my wrist twice I was referred to him because I wanted a proper assessment and closure. He listened to me, looked at the wrist and then took some measurements on my good and healed wrist to compare movement on both wrists. I was then sent for X-rays. Afterwards the measurements taken were overlaid on the X-rays and I could see where the restrictions lay. As I have little pain during odd movements I've decided not to have a correctional operation and was referred to a orthopaedic hand specialist which I'll see next week.

I went to see Mr Mathew regarding a painful wrist/arm, he really listened to my symptoms, he told me what he thought the problem was and sent me for x-rays and a scan then gave me his diagnosis. He's such a nice man who puts you at ease, giving clear medical consultations anyone could understand. It turns out my ulna was too long and was causing damage to the bones in my hand and wrist. I was sceptical, I'm 49 and have had this same arm all my life so why had it just started causing a nuisance? No problem for Mr Mathew, 'I'll prove it, I'll inject your wrist the pain will go but return within 3 months.' He did just that, he certainly knows his job and you will never meet a more caring, genuine consultant. Although he's leaving Chesterfield for London (our loss their gain), he went ahead with my surgery. To say I was nervous was an understatement but he was so confident and reassuring I just knew he'd do his utmost to make sure I was ok. The day of my op he checked on me twice afterwards and let me know everything had gone well. Even had post op check early in his clinic because he needed to know everything was going well before he left. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Mathew, really nice guy and vey competent consultant. I found Mr Philip Mathew to be efficient and professional. He was very clear with his advice regarding my situation. He listened and understood what I had to say before reaching his advised opinion. He is well spoken, patient and a pleasure to consult with. John Dobinson 7th October 2013

Mr Mathew's advice to my father during his first consultation was excellent and we are grateful to him for be in frank with us before the operation. It was pleasing to see him during the evening after the operation and in clinic after that. Chesterfield Royal is extremely lucky to have him on board and we are grateful to him for the good service he has given to my father. Neil Turner Son of Clifford Turner
