Weight disorders encompass a spectrum of conditions characterised by unhealthy weight gain, loss, or fluctuations that can significantly impact physical and mental health. Common types of weight disorders include obesity, underweight, and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Understanding their signs, symptoms, and associated illnesses is crucial for early intervention and effective management.

The signs of weight disorders vary depending on the type. For obesity, visible weight gain, difficulty with physical activity, fatigue, and joint pain are common. Psychological signs such as low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety may also emerge. In underweight individuals, signs may include frailty, hair thinning, irregular menstruation in women, and persistent fatigue. Eating disorders often involve behavioural symptoms like extreme dieting, binge eating, purging, or preoccupation with food and body image.

Unintended weight changes—either rapid gain or loss—can signal underlying medical issues. For example, sudden weight gain may indicate hormonal imbalances like hypothyroidism, while rapid weight loss could be linked to diabetes, cancer, or gastrointestinal disorders. Monitoring such changes is vital to identifying their root cause.

Weight disorders are associated with a variety of illnesses. Obesity is a significant risk factor for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and certain cancers.

It can also exacerbate conditions like osteoarthritis and sleep apnea. Underweight individuals may face challenges such as weakened immunity, anaemia, and osteoporosis. Eating disorders can lead to severe complications, including electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal problems, and cardiovascular stress.

Awareness of the signs and symptoms of weight disorders and their potential complications is key to early detection and effective treatment. Maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and mental health support can prevent and manage these disorders.

Medical evaluation is essential for those experiencing unexplained weight changes or symptoms to address underlying causes and improve overall health. Weight disorders, while complex, are treatable with the right approach and professional guidance.
